ISLA'S POV
The company was surreal. Its designs were top notch, they looked like the plan was drawn by a
professional. So why would the almighty Montgomery want me? I stood there looking around
and imagining what working here would be like for me.
“Ma'am.” A man probably the security called out.
He must have caught me gaping and unable to close my mouth. He led the way and I followed
him. When we reached a door on the last floor, he stopped and left. He didn't say if I should enter
or knock so I just stood there debating with myself whether to knock or just barge in.
“Enter, don't enter. Knock, don't knock.” I argued with myself.
“Come in and stop whispering.” A man said from inside the room of the door where I stood
arguing with myself.
I entered, but to my surprise he was alone. No workers or co directors, planners. It wasn't even a
board room, just a regular office, except that it was spacious. Outside the door, I heard a voice
that I was certain was Grant's my heart skipped a bit. He worked here too.
“I'm busy.” He said after the person knocked on the door.
“Monster or Mentor.” It came to my mind but this was not the time to think of something like
that.
“Speak.” He commanded.
“Hi…good morning I'm-” I started.
“I know, Isla no need for pleasantries, get to it.” He said cutting me short.
I took a deep breath. In my firm, I was the boss. Here, I had to put in the work.
He brought out some paperwork and dropped them on the table."Our old architect left some of these, how do we start?" He asked me to push the papers to the
part of the table where I stood.
His monster rate was going up, he didn't even offer coffee, but I didn't want to get ahead of
myself.
I drew the papers closer. Something if not everything was wrong with the structure and plan, I
looked up at him, he smirked. He probably thought I was a fake and I didn't know what I was
doing.
"It's wrong." I blurted out. I regretted immediately because I remembered how beautiful the
outside of the building was and Kaelen was a man who barely joked, so he would have
handpicked his architect. So I had indirectly said:
"You don't know what you drew out and Kaelen here just picked you out of pity because he was
a rich snub or as they say a 'monster' "
I was surely overthinking at that moment because I saw his mouth move, but I didn't know what
he said till he said it again.
"I'm sorry?" He asked.
I took a deep breath and whispered under my breath "here goes nothing."
I took a red biro and pointed out all the places I saw errors and backed up with explanations. I
used the red biro to circle them out and to my surprise, he listened carefully. I had reached a flow
state out of excitement of being able to talk about my job again. After what seemed like thirty
minutes, I was done. I heaved a sigh feeling proud but then the feeling disappeared when I
looked at the sheets. I had ruined them with different circles.
"That's the only problem I saw." I said taking a step back, waiting for his reply. Everywhere was
quiet. Oh God, had I done too much? This was my problem, miss perfection now I had blown my
opportunity. Why couldn't I just nod and agree like others? These questions flooded my mind.
"You start tomorrow." He said. Just threw words. Three words that held so much power and
restored my dignity. It felt like he used fire to burn all the doubts I had in my head figuratively
speaking."Thank you." I said, it almost sounded like a whisper. I wanted to run and scream. I had the job, I
really did.
He wasn't really a monster after all.
I carried my bag I had dropped on the table and started walking towards the door, I was already
outside when he called me back.
“Sir?” I answered turning to face him.
“Be early.” He said, his tone stern.
I just nodded and left. Two words and he couldn't remember to say while I was in there? I rolled
my eyes and scoffed.
My mind went back to the moment I stepped into his office. I felt light, like I could fly. The job
was finally mine. Kaelen Montgomery, the man everyone called a monster, had just given me a
chance. Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all. Maybe those cold eyes of his hid something nicer.
I smiled to myself as I walked down the fancy hallway. The elevator dinged open. I stepped in
and pressed the ground floor button.
Just as the doors started to close, a hand shot out and stopped them.
It was Grant. I was in fact shocked.
He stepped inside quickly, his face looking so serious. My heart did that stupid skip again.
“Congrats on the job, Isla,” he said, his voice quite low. He stood too close to me and the
elevator felt tiny now.
“Thanks,” I mumbled, staring at the floor numbers lighting up.
He didn’t move away. Instead, he leaned in a little closer. "You know Kaelen doesn’t just hire
anyone. He picked you for a reason.”
I looked up at him. His eyes locked on mine. Something in them made my stomach flip, not the
good flip, the nervous one.
“What reason?” I asked, trying to sound brave.
Grant’s lips curved into a small, almost sad smile.
“Let’s just say…. he’s not the only one who’s been watching you.”“Remember our deal.” He said in a singsong voice.
The elevator dinged and the doors opened to the lobby.
He stepped out first, then turned back. “See you tomorrow, boss lady.” He said sarcastically.
Could my day get any better? I put Grant here, I worked hard for him to be here and for what?
The doors closed before I could say anything.
I stood there frozen. Watching you? What did that mean? Kaelen? Or…. Grant?
My phone buzzed in my bag. I pulled it out.
One new message.
From an unknown number.
“Welcome to the team. Don’t be late. We have plans for you. K”
I felt my hands tremble.
What had I just walked into?
