The realization hit me like lightning. Azrael Shepherd, Alpha of our rival pack, was bound to me by fate itself. My heart should have soared. Instead, it plummeted as revulsion washed across his features. "State your identity." He asked with a cold and dismissive tune as if I were nothing. "My name is Seraphina Gregory. Today's my eighteenth birthday. I'm classified as..." I hesitated, then forced out the word that had defined my misery. "Omega." His face transformed, shock melting into pure contempt. "This has to be some kind of twisted joke. The Moon Goddess paired me with an omega?" A bitter laugh escaped him. "Unacceptable. Alphas don't bond with the weakest rank. It goes against everything natural!" Moisture gathered at the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let it fall. I studied the ground instead, unable to stomach the judgment radiating from him. "You don't understand, I'm actually…" His fingers tangled in my collar before I could finish, jerking me violently toward him. "Let me make something crystal clear. My position demands strength, not weakness. This bond is a genetic error that needs correcting. Your kind stays with your kind. I refuse to degrade myself!" The shove that followed sent me crashing backward. Pain exploded through my body, but it was nothing compared to the agony ripping through my soul. Hot tears carved paths down my cheeks. He doesn't know. He can't know what I really am. But even if I revealed the truth, that Alpha blood ran through my veins, would it matter? His words had already condemned me. "The mate bond isn't optional! Fate chose us!" My voice cracked as I pushed back against his cruelty. His expression remained stone. Zephyra was thrashing inside me, her anguished howls filling my mind. Heat built behind my eyes, the dangerous kind that signaled my wolf breaking through. I slammed them shut before the glow could betray me. "You disgust me," he declared flatly. Then came the formal words, spoken with ceremonial finality: "I, Alpha Azrael Shepherd, sever the mate bond with Seraphina Gregory. You are nothing to me." Each syllable carved deeper into my chest than Liza's claws ever could. This wasn't just rejection, it was the annihilation of every hope I'd clung to. This can't be happening. Fury ignited beneath the pain. "Fine! You want to destroy this? I'll finish it! I, Seraphina Gregory, sever our bond as well, Azrael Shepherd! May the Moon Goddess ensure you wander alone forever, never finding the happiness you just threw away! I despise you with everything I am!" The words erupted from me as my eyes blazed with supernatural light. For a heartbeat, he froze and I prayed desperately that he hadn't noticed. Then he turned and strode back toward the packhouse without even a backward glance. Perfect. The last thing I needed was for him to witness what I truly was. My rejection had obliterated me from the inside out. The bond's severing felt like death by a thousand cuts. I collapsed to my knees, burying my face in my hands as sobs wracked my body. Why was my existence nothing but suffering? Rejected by my destined mate. Forever mateless now. How could anyone be this heartless? Worthlessness consumed me. I clenched my fists until my nails drew blood, then stumbled to my feet through a curtain of tears. I ran blindly toward the barn, throwing myself inside and slamming the door with enough force to rattle the walls. Mira jerked awake with a startled cry. "Sera?! What happened? Why are you.." Her eyes widened as she took in my tear-streaked face. "I can't stay in this place another second. I'm leaving tonight. Will you come?" The question came out between gasping breaths. She went rigid with shock. "I understand if you'd rather stay. But I'm done with this hellhole.” Mira's response came without hesitation. "Absolutely! Forget this pack, I'm with you, Sera. You're all the family I have left." Relief flooded through me as I nodded. We hastily gathered our meager possessions, a process that took mere minutes given how little we owned. Creeping toward the forest's edge, we spotted a single guard stationed at his post. Fortune smiled on us; he'd dozed off at his station. I seized Mira's wrist and we bolted, our feet flying across the ground. She gasped for air, struggling to maintain the pace. "Sera! Stop... can't breathe... too fast..." she wheezed. Reality struck me, she lacked my supernatural speed. "Your velocity is insane! How?" she managed between ragged breaths. I exhaled heavily and faced her, deciding the moment had arrived. "I possess the ability to shift, Mira." Her jaw dropped open. "Wait, what?" "I'll explain everything, but we need distance from pack lands first." Understanding flickered across her face, and we resumed our escape. Relief washed over me when I detected no pursuing wolves, they were likely all gathered inside for the visiting dignitaries. Grateful for that small mercy, we pressed onward. Beyond the territorial boundaries, our sprint mellowed to a steady jog. Darkness enveloped the forest, but my enhanced vision pierced through it effortlessly. "Y-Your eyes... they're illuminated," Mira stammered, wonder evident in her trembling voice. The time for revelation had come. I drew a steadying breath. "Can I share something with you, Mira?" Her cautious nod encouraged me to continue. "Will you swear to keep this between us?" She placed her palm over her heart solemnly. "You have my word. Though I sense there's even more you're withholding..." Her gaze remained fixed on my luminous eyes. "I apologize for the deception, Mira." I met her stare directly. "My transformation abilities manifested in early childhood. I'm not an ordinary shifter. These glowing eyes prove it." She swallowed hard, nodding her comprehension. "May I witness your wolf form?" "Are you certain?" I verified. Another nod. "Alright then." My bones began their familiar restructuring as I surrendered to the transformation, a low growl rumbling from my throat. I deliberately left my eyes blazing, I wanted Mira to see my true self in all its glory. Mira's eyes expanded to impossible wideness, rapid blinking betraying her shock. Her thoughts remained opaque to me, I wouldn't invade her mental privacy. Yet the awe radiating from her expression was unmistakable. "You're absolutely magnificent, Sera. Incredible... I've never encountered a wolf with bioluminescent properties before." She murmured this while her fingers gently stroked my radiant golden-white pelt. "You resemble a divine Wolf Goddess," she breathed reverently. A foreign sensation prickled across my awareness. 'Mira, climb onto my back immediately! I'm detecting others approaching.' I transmitted the urgent thought directly into her consciousness. Without questioning, she mounted and secured her grip in my fur. 'Brace yourself,' I warned mentally before she acknowledged with a hum. My legs became a blur as I raced through the darkness, eyes blazing like twin beacons. The forest stretched endlessly before us, and uncertainty about our destination gnawed at me. My priority was simple: create maximum distance while evading the wolves I sensed trailing us. Thankfully, I'd masked our scent trail, rendering us untrackable. When my supernatural senses confirmed we'd finally lost our pursuers, I decelerated. We'd escaped pack territory entirely now. Hours must have passed during our flight. "That speed was unreal, Sera!" Mira exclaimed breathlessly. "Your concealment abilities, how did the entire pack remain oblivious to your wolf all this time?" 'I became exceptionally skilled at masking both my transformation and my scent,' I explained through our mental connection. She hummed in acknowledgment. "Your expertise is remarkable. I completely missed all the signs," she admitted. "Though I always suspected you were hiding something significant." Exhaling deeply, I prepared for the most crucial revelation. 'The truth is... I'm the rightful Alpha of the Blueming Pack.' Her sharp intake of breath told me the magnitude of this confession had landed. "Impossible!" 'My parents ruled the Blueming Pack as Alphas until their assassination. The killer's identity remains unknown. After their deaths, Alpha Thorne and his family usurped control. When he discovered my inability to shift or so he believed, he banished me to the barn and stripped me of my rank. I'm fortunate he didn't simply execute me.' The memories flooded back as I recounted the painful history. "What motivated you to hide your abilities?" 'My parents' final command before death. They insisted I conceal my wolf to ensure my survival. They warned that exposure would result in my public execution.' "Yes, your difference made you vulnerable." Her understanding was immediate. "What about your luminescent eyes? Where does that radiate from?" Curiosity colored her question. 'That mystery has plagued me my entire existence. Even I cannot explain the phenomenon.' "Your parents never offered an explanation?" 'Never.' "Perhaps it's a divine blessing. The gods and goddesses selecting you for something greater." *'I've considered that possibility, though it often feels more like a curse than a gift.'* "Absolutely not. This grants you extraordinary capabilities, your speed and power eclipse every werewolf I've encountered," she countered firmly. Silence descended between us after that, broken only by nature's nocturnal symphony, cricket songs and bird calls creating a peaceful backdrop. I maintained a leisurely pace while Mira drifted into slumber on my back. Gratitude for her companionship overwhelmed me. Abandoning her behind would have crushed me with guilt. Throughout our childhood, I'd appointed myself as Mira's guardian. She represented my sole family, my dearest friend, and I'd defend her with everything I possessed. Escaping the pack brought relief, though I understood they wouldn't pursue us far. We'd left nothing valuable behind. I was orchestrating our journey toward normalcy. We'd abandoned nobody of consequence in that forsaken place. My parents had entrusted me with reclaiming my inheritance, though not yet. Not in this moment of vulnerability. Eventually, when I'd accumulated sufficient strength and courage to confront them, I'd return to seize what was rightfully mine. When I felt prepared to battle for my posi tion, I'd reclaim my destiny as the legitimate Alpha of the pack. Azrael Shepherd, your reckoning awaits my return.
