Aldwin swung the hammer, a one-handed attack that appeared to have a life of its own. Basil's killer moved to block, a display of dexterity that was as impressive as it was ineffective, for the hammer smashed through the blade, sinking into the side of the man's breastplate, leaving a massive dent and knocking him to the ground. Aldwin advanced to finish the job, but Sir Malcolm grabbed his arm, pulling him back just in time as another blade flashed in front of him. His new opponent was short but fast. Aldwin saw no face, for the helmet had dropped its visor, and now he appeared as some strange metal creature, intent on the smith's demise. Sir Malcolm struck, a glancing blow that rebounded off the enemy's shield. His opponent turned to face this new threat, giving Aldwin time to react. He
