CHAPTER 1
Eliana POV
"Look at her dress," a middle-aged woman near the front whispered, nudging her friend. "It matches his suit. Late Alpha Marcus always planned for this, you know."
"Of course it's Eliana," the man next to her agreed quietly. "The late Alpha trained her himself. She's lived in the main house since she was eight years old. Who else would Silas pick?"
Eliana stood near the wall, hearing every word. She smoothed down the front of her soft silver dress, trying to calm the nervous fluttering in her stomach.
Ten years ago, when she was just an eight-year-old girl, Alpha Marcus brought her home after leading his warriors to defend a neighboring pack from a brutal attack. Her parents had been killed in the fight, leaving her alone. Alpha Marcus adopted her on the spot, bringing her into the main pack house and treating her like his own daughter. She grew up sitting at his table and training beside his son, Silas.
The whole pack always assumed she was destined to stand beside Silas one day.
"Calm down," a warm voice said beside her.
Eliana turned to see Sarah, one of the older maid servants who had helped raise her in the manor. Sarah gave her a small, comforting smile.
"You look beautiful tonight, Eliana," Sarah murmured. "Happy eighteenth birthday, my dear. Alpha Marcus would be so proud if he were here."
"I just miss him, Sarah," Eliana confessed softly, her fingers tight around the fabric of her dress. "Ever since he passed three years ago, everything has felt so different. Silas has been so distant."
"He had to take over as Alpha at eighteen, child," Sarah said gently. "Running the pack for three years on his own hasn't been easy on him. But tonight, you turn eighteen. Tonight, everything changes."
Before Eliana could reply, a deep horn echoed through the crowded room.
The heavy wooden doors swung open, and the hall went completely quiet.
Silas walked in.
He wore a dark suit with silver trim, his jaw set and his dark eyes fixed straight ahead. Power radiated off him with every step. People bowed their heads as he passed, but as he reached the center aisle, his eyes briefly flicked toward Eliana.
For a single second, their gaze locked.
Spark.
An electric jolt slammed into Eliana's chest, making her heart violently skip a beat. Heat rushed through her veins like wildfire, and a clear, undeniable voice echoed in her mind for the very first time:
Mate.
She was eighteen today. The bond was finally awake.
Silas paused for a fraction of a second, his chest heavy as his pupils dilated. He felt the exact same spark. He knew.
A soft sigh of relief escaped Eliana's lips. We are mates, she thought. It's real.
Silas broke eye contact and walked straight up the steps to the platform. Waiting for him up there was Beta Jonathan—his father's chief adviser—and Jonathan's daughter, Lyra.
Lyra stood tall in a bright red dress, her blonde hair falling in perfect waves. She held her head high, a confident smile on her face as she looked down at the crowd.
Silas turned to face the room and raised his hand.
"Welcome, everyone," Silas announced, his deep voice carrying easily across the silent hall. "Tonight, we gather for the Choosing Ceremony. As your Alpha, it is my duty to establish the leadership that will protect and guide the Moonstone Pack."
Clapping broke out, then quickly died down as Silas held up his hand again.
"Before I make any decisions about the future of our leadership," Silas continued, his voice cold and flat, "there is a personal matter that must be settled publicly."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd.
Eliana's brows furrowed. She took a step forward from the wall, her chest still burning with the fresh heat of the mate bond.
Silas looked straight down at her. His eyes were devoid of any warmth or affection.
"Eliana," Silas called out, his voice sharp and clear. "Step forward."
The crowd parted quickly, leaving an open path between Eliana and the platform. Eliana's heart hammered against her ribs, but she kept her head up and walked toward the stage.
"Silas?" she asked softly, stopping at the foot of the stairs. "What is this?"
"You should address him as Alpha Silas," Lyra interrupted smoothly from the stage, her red lips curling into a cruel smile. "Learn your place, orphan."
Eliana ignored Lyra, keeping her eyes locked on Silas. "Silas, what are you doing?"
"I am doing what is necessary for this pack," Silas said coldly. He took a heavy breath and stared right into her eyes. "You have lived under my father's roof since you were eight. He treated you like a daughter, and I have cared for you like a sister. But a pack needs clear boundaries."
The fresh mate spark in Eliana's chest pulsed, trying desperately to connect to his. Silas didn't budge. He leaned into the bond and spoke the words clearly for the entire room to hear.
"I, Alpha Silas of the Moonstone Pack, reject you as my mate."
A collective gasp echoed across the grand hall.
The brand-new thread connecting their souls didn't just break—it snapped with a violent, agonizing shock. A sharp, burning pain flared deep in Eliana's chest, taking her breath away entirely. Her knees buckled, hit the cold stone floor, and she clutched her chest in sheer agony.
"Silas... no," Eliana whispered, her voice trembling through tears of shock. "You felt it too. We're mates."
"The bond means nothing if it doesn't serve the pack," Silas said, staring down at her with complete detachment. "Accept it, Eliana. The rejection is final."
Eliana looked up at him from the ground, her chest heaving as the brutal reality set in. There was no love in his eyes, no regret, and no room to bargain. The boy she grew up with was completely gone.
A heavy, crushing defeat settled over her spirit. Knowing she had no choice and no power left to fight, Eliana forced herself to choke back a sob. She squeezed her eyes shut, felt the last thread of the bond fray into ash, and let out a broken, shuddering breath.
"I... I accept your rejection, Alpha Silas," she whispered, her voice barely carrying over her own heartbreak.
The final string snapped completely. Silas gave a single, satisfied nod, turning his face away from her as if she were a finished chore.
"To the strength of our Alpha!" Beta Jonathan suddenly shouted into the stunned silence, raising his glass high.
Slowly, awkwardly, people in the crowd began to murmur and shift. The festive mood was gone, replaced by heavy tension, but the music started playing anyway to keep the ceremony moving forward.
Eliana forced her trembling legs to stand, completely alone at the bottom of the stairs, the sharp pain in her heart tearing her apart inside. Nobody came near her. Nobody met her eyes. The same pack members who had smiled at her minutes ago turned their backs, suddenly treating her like a ghost.
She bit her lip until she tasted blood, wiped her eyes, and slowly turned away from the stage.
That was the moment her world shattered, and the day her life changed forever.
