Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Girl I like Isn’t a Girl Anymore The first time Kian Anderson saw Monica Hale again… He almost didn’t recognize her. Almost. “Kuya, seriously, you’re being rude.” Kian didn’t respond. Because across the room—standing near the balcony, city lights spilling behind her—was Monica. Laughing. Like she didn’t just walk back into his life and shift something he had spent years keeping under control. “She’s been here for ten minutes,” his sister muttered. “And you haven’t even said hi.” “I just got here.” “That’s not an excuse.” It wasn’t. But Kian wasn’t about to admit the truth. That the moment he walked in… she was the only thing he noticed. Monica Hale. His sister’s best friend. The girl who used to trail behind them, asking endless questions, rolling her eyes at his teasing, acting like she had something to prove. Back then, she was easy to ignore. Now? Not even close. Because the Monica standing in front of him tonight— Wasn’t a girl anymore. The black dress she wore was simple. Clean. But the way it hugged her figure, the way she moved like she was completely aware of every eye in the room— It wasn’t simple at all. It was deliberate. Dangerous. And Kian didn’t like how easily his attention locked onto her. As if sensing it, Monica turned. Their eyes met. And just like that— Everything stilled. No surprise. No awkwardness. Just a slow, steady look that held… and held… and didn’t break. Kian felt his jaw tighten. Because that look? It wasn’t accidental. She knew exactly what she was doing. “Oh,” his sister whispered beside him. “That’s new.” Kian exhaled sharply. “Don’t.” “Don’t what? Notice the tension? Because wow—” “Drop it.” But she was already grinning. “Too late.” Monica started walking toward them. Each step calm. Confident. Unhurried. Like she had all the time in the world—and knew he’d wait. Kian didn’t move. Didn’t look away. Didn’t give her that satisfaction. “Hey,” Monica greeted, pulling his sister into a quick hug. “I missed you!” his sister said immediately. “I missed you too.” Her voice was warm. Familiar. But when she pulled back, her gaze slid to Kian— And lingered. Just enough to make it personal. “Hi, Kian.” There it was. His name. Soft. But not innocent. “Monica.” Short. Controlled. Safe. Or at least, he tried. She tilted her head slightly, studying him. The same way she used to when she was younger— Except now, there was something sharper behind it. “You’ve been avoiding me.” His sister froze. “Wait—what?” “I haven’t.” Monica’s lips curved, just slightly. “Really? Because every time I come over, you suddenly disappear.” “I have work.” “Convenient.” “True.” “Hmm.” The sound lingered longer than necessary. Intentional. “Kian, are you seriously dodging Monica?” his sister asked, half amused, half curious. “I’m not dodging anyone.” “Feels like it,” Monica said quietly. And then— She stepped closer. Not enough to be obvious. But enough that he noticed. Enough that it shifted the air between them. Kian’s gaze dropped—just for a second. A mistake. Because now he noticed everything. The way her hand brushed lightly against her side. The subtle rise and fall of her breathing. The way she didn’t move away. “Relax,” Monica murmured, just loud enough for him to hear. “I am relaxed.” She smiled. Slow. Knowing. “Doesn’t look like it.” That did it. Kian stepped in closer. Closing the space she created. Turning it back on her. “You should be careful, Monica.” Her eyes didn’t waver. “Why?” “Because you don’t know what you’re starting.” A pause. A beat. Then— She leaned in slightly, her voice softer now. “But what if I do?” Silence. Heavy. Charged. Dangerous. From the side, his sister let out a quiet, stunned laugh. “Okay… I definitely missed a chapter here.” Neither of them answered. Because neither of them were paying attention anymore. And that was the problem. Because Kian had spent years keeping his distance. Keeping things clear. Simple. Safe. But Monica Hale? She wasn’t making it easy anymore. And worse— He wasn’t sure he wanted her to.
