Chapter 1
Stella Sterling had spent the entire morning arranging them herself. White peonies. Her husband's favorite. Crystal vases scattered throughout the living room.
She'd cooked his preferred meal. Chilled his wine. Put on the silk dress he'd once said made her look like a goddess.
She was five weeks pregnant. Terrified. Overjoyed.
And she had no idea her world was about to end.
The front door slammed open at 8:47 PM. Two hours earlier than expected.
Joshua Sterling stormed in with the cold fury of a man who had already made up his mind. His tie was loosened. His jaw was clenched. His eyes, those beautiful gray eyes that had once looked at her like she was his entire universe, were filled with something she'd never seen directed at her before.
Disgust.
"Joshua?" Stella rose from the dining table, her heart already racing with fear. "You're early. I made your favorite."
"Don't." He held up a hand. Cutting her off with brutal finality. "Don't you dare pretend to be the doting wife."
She blinked. Confused. "What are you talking about?"
He laughed. Hollow. Mocking. It made her flinch.
Then he pulled an envelope from his jacket and threw it onto the table. Photographs spilled out. Photographs of her. At a café. With a man.
Her brother.
"Joshua, that's my brother. You know that's my brother. He was visiting from"
"Stop lying to me!" His voice thundered through the penthouse. She stepped back.
She'd never seen him like this. The controlled billionaire. The man who never raised his voice. He was shaking with rage.
"Joshua, please"
"I had you followed, Stella." The words came out cold and precise. Each one a deliberate knife. "For three weeks. The café. The hotel lobby. The late-night phone calls. You think I wouldn't notice? You think I'm stupid?"
Her blood turned to ice. "You had me followed? Why would you"
"Because you've been distant." He stepped closer. She could smell whiskey on his breath. "You've been hiding things. You've been secretive. And now I know why."
She reached for his hand. "Joshua, I haven't been hiding anything. I was going to tell you tonight. I'm pregnant. We're having a baby"
"Whose baby?"
The question hung in the air like a gunshot.
Stella's hand froze mid-reach. "What?"
"Whose baby is it?" His voice was quiet now. Somehow worse than the shouting. "The café man? The one you've been meeting? Is he the father?"
"Joshua, that's my brother! You've met him. At our wedding!"
"Then why did you delete his calls from your phone? Why did you meet him in hotel lobbies instead of bringing him here?" He was circling her now. A predator toying with prey. "Why did you tell me you were going to your mother's when you were actually at the Opulence Grand?"
Stella's heart stopped.
The Opulence Grand. She'd been there meeting with a recruiter. A secret interview for a management position. She'd wanted to surprise him with her ambition. To show him she wasn't just a housewife. To prove she could be more than his trophy.
But she'd never told him. She was afraid he'd laugh. Afraid he'd remind her that her place was in his home, not in his boardrooms.
"I can explain," she whispered.
"You can explain." He laughed again. No humor in it. "You're pregnant. With someone else's child. And you want to explain."
"Joshua, please listen to me. I love you. I would never"
"You're an ordinary woman, Stella." His words were ice. "I gave you everything. My name. My fortune. My life. And this is how you repay me? By spreading your legs for some"
"Stop!"
She slapped him.
Instinct. A desperate attempt to make him see her. Hear her. Believe her.
Her palm connected with his cheek. The sound echoed through the marble foyer.
He didn't move. He just stared at her with those cold gray eyes.
And in that moment, she knew. She'd lost him. The man she'd given up everything for. Her career. Her independence. Her identity. He was looking at her like she was nothing.
"The divorce papers," he said quietly, "will be on your nightstand in the morning. I expect you to be gone by the time I return from work."
"You can't do this," she sobbed. Her composure finally shattered. "I'm carrying your child, Joshua. Please. Just take a DNA test. Please, I'm begging you."
"I don't need a test to know you've betrayed me."
He walked toward the door. His footsteps echoed in the silence.
He paused at the threshold. His back still to her. He delivered the final blow.
"You were nothing before me, Stella. An ordinary woman from an ordinary family. I elevated you. And you threw it all away for a man who doesn't even have the decency to show his face."
The door closed behind him.
Stella sank to the floor. Surrounded by white peonies and photographs of her with her brother.
The silk dress was soaked with tears within minutes.
She pressed a hand to her still-flat stomach and made a promise to the tiny life growing inside her. A promise she would keep with every breath for the rest of her life.
I will never let anyone make me feel this small again. Never. And I will make sure my children never know what it feels like to be discarded by someone who was supposed to love them.
She looked at the photographs scattered around her. Her brother's face. Innocent. Loving.
Someone had manipulated this. Someone had twisted her life into a weapon against her.
But she didn't have the strength to fight back. Not tonight.
Tonight, all she could do was survive.
Stella gathered her broken pieces and began to plan her escape. She had nothing. No money of her own. No career. No family to turn to. Just a baby. A child that the man she loved had already rejected.
But she would find a way. She would rebuild. She would become someone Joshua Sterling would never recognize.
And one day, when she was strong enough, she would make him regret every single word he'd said to her tonight.
She picked up her phone and dialed her brother.
"Stella? It's late. What's wrong?"
"I need your help," she whispered. Her voice cracked. "I need to disappear."
