Betrayed and Thrown Out
Her husband forgot their anniversary. At first, Rayne had thought that maybe he just pretended not to remember so he could throw a surprise party later, but it was already dinner time and there was no such thing happening.
This was their three year anniversary, how could he forget? Lately, her husband, Quentin hadn't been paying much attention to her and she wondered why. They never quarrelled, he just moved out of her bedroom and hardly spoke to her after that. Everytime she tried to ask him what was wrong he would always say that work was stressing him out and that he didn't want to disturb her with his late night work attitude while she was sleeping.
She was left to eat alone with her mother-in-law, her father-in-law, and her husband's two brothers. She waited until everyone was done with their meal before speaking.
"Please, does anyone know where Quentin is? It's getting late and I've tried calling but his number isn't going through."
"Why are you asking us? Isn't he your husband?" Mark, one of the brothers asked.
Quentin was the first born, then Mark, and then Flynn.
"If you had given him children, maybe he would have a reason to return home early." Her father-in-law, Mr Hayes, said with a sneer.
Rayne felt her cheeks go hot with embarrassment. Lately, her father-in-law used every opportunity to remind her that she had no children. Her mother-in-law had even called her barren to her face a few times. She had been to various doctors, they all said the same thing, she was healthy and normal. So why couldn't she get pregnant?
She tried to get Quentin to go for a check up too but he immediately got angry that she was trying to insinuate that he was the cause of the problem. He reminded her that he had gotten a girl pregnant in highschool, though he made her abort it back then. But it was proof that he could impregnate a woman therefore, the problem must be from her.
Was that why he was avoiding her lately? Was he angry because she couldn't bear a child after three years?
"I'm sorry for asking. I'll go to my room now. Good night." She said to them and stood to leave the table.
As she walked by, Flynn put his leg out and tripped her. She fell and scraped her knee, knocking down some glasses from the table in the process.
"Being barren isn't enough, are you now blind?" Her mother-in-law, Estella yelled at her.
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry? What will I do with your apology now? Do you know how much those plates you just broke cost? Of course you don't, you grew up in an orphanage, a poor rat like you wouldn't understand the value of things."
Rayne gasped at the insult. Until now, she had only been insulted for not bearing a child. But her mother-in-law seems to have upgraded to insulting her background, reminding her that her dear parents were dead.
"I apologise for the mess." She said with tears in her eyes. "I'll get a maid to clean it up."
"No. Get a broom and come clean it up yourself. Since you can't have children, the main reason for my son marrying you, then you might as well work and earn the privilege of living here." Mr Hayes said to her.
The other two brothers laughed at her while she was being scolded. She didn't dare disobey her father-in-law. She immediately went to get a broom and began to sweep the broken pieces on the floor. While she was cleaning, Quentin finally returned but he was holding a woman's hand. Rayne recognised the woman as her husband's secretary, Olivia.
Why would he bring Olivia back home, and why were they holding hands. Olivia was smiling as Quentin whispered something in her ears and Rayne immediately stopped sweeping when Quentin kissed Olivia on the lips IN HER PRESENCE. Did he have no shame? His family was also here.
Rayne had so many questions. When did Quentin start having an affair? How long has it been going on? Was that why he moved out of her bedroom and started ignoring her? Why did he bring his mistress home?
"Quentin! What is the meaning of this?" She asked him and he stopped kissing Olivia.
"How dare you raise your voice at me?" He glared at her.
"Baby, don't waste your time on her. She's not worth it." Olivia said as she touched his chest.
"It's our anniversary, Quentin, how could you do this to me?" Rayne asked him as tears dropped down her face. Then she turned to Olivia.
"And you, aren't you ashamed of showing your face in another woman's matrimonial home?"
Olivia laughed.
"You're barren. You don't deserve that ring on your finger."
"Don't you dare insult me." Rayne replied.
"It's not an insult. She's just telling the truth. The main reason I married you was to have a child. Since you haven't been able to get pregnant, I have no use for you anymore."
"B.but I thought you loved me?" Rayne asked and Quentin laughed.
"Love you? I was only forced to marry you by my grandfather. He was the one who loved you just because you were his smartest employee. I only went along with it so he would add me to his will and he's dead now so I don't need you for that as well. I've already gotten my inheritance." As he said this, he dropped a file on the table.
"That is the divorce paper. Sign it so I can be free of you."
Divorce paper? Rayne stared at the document in disbelief. Her world had been turned upside down in just one night.
"No! I refuse to sign it. You won't get rid of me so easily." She said to him and he became furious.
She yelled as he grabbed her hair and pulled hard.
"Stop it! You're hurting me!"
"And I'll hurt you more if you don't sign that document. I don't need you anymore. Olivia is pregnant for me. We're going to have a baby and I want to marry her before our child is born. I can't do that if I'm still shackled to you, so sign the papers, NOW!"
She quickly signed the papers out of fear and he pushed her to the ground.
"Now leave my house. You're no longer welcome here. And make sure you don't take anything from my house when you leave, everything you own was paid for with my money." He spat at her and then took Olivia closer to his family to make proper introductions.
They welcomed Olivia with a smile and Rayne left the house in tears. She had nowhere to go. Ever since she got married to Quentin, he made her cut off from all her friends, now she was alone and penniless.
She walked and walked till her legs nearly gave out. When it began to rain, she had to take shelter in the closest place which turned out to be a club. The music was so loud, and everyone inside was either drunk or dancing so no one noticed her tears. That made her feel a little better. Imagine if someone she knew recognised her in such a miserable state. It would be too humiliating to bear. In here, most people were too drunk to notice.
She decided to be carefree for one night in her life at least. After all, she had always been a good girl, yet look at how it turned out. She studied hard, made good grades, kept her virginity till her wedding night, and always did as she was told. Still she got insulted daily, was cheated on, thrown out. What was the point of being cautious? She joined the people on the dance floor. There were so many bodies packed together, moving and gyrating on the dance floor. Someone gave her a drink and she took it without asking questions.
She was a lightweight so just that one glass made her tipsy. When she was tired, she went to the bar to sit and was offered another free drink. Quentin always told her she looked ugly, so she was surprised men noticed even her in here. But it boosted her ego a little bit. If he didn’t want herm then she would look for someone else who did. There was a man sitting quietly by the bar ignoring everyone else. She grabbed him and kissed him.
"You're drunk." He said as he pulled away from her.
That was when she got a proper look at him. He looked like he was carved from perfection. His curly black hair fell over his alluring blue eyes, and his lips looked so soft. He was also muscular and from the way he towered over her even while seated, he was also tall.
"Don't be a killjoy. I want to be happy tonight. Make me happy, let's find somewhere more private." She giggled and tried to pull him close again.
Normally, she would never have been this brazen but with alcohol in her system, and the fact that she was depressed, she decided to throw caution to the wind.
"I don't want to wake up tomorrow and be accused of r**e, so no, thank you." He responded.
"Oh come on! It's just one night. We'll never see each other again after this. You don't even have to tell me your name."
This time, when she kissed him, he didn't stop her.
Arden was having a bad week which was why he came here to drink. He had just been betrayed by his half brother and his inheritance was taken from him so at the moment, he was basically penniless. He planned to get his revenge but first he wanted to drink away his sorrow. And this beautiful woman was offering a distraction, like she said, it was just one night.
What could possibly go wrong?
