The Night Love Broke.
Cassandra's Pov. “Yes… yes, that's it. Damian prefers the hazelnut cake infused with espresso, and for wine, keep it simple please do the Aurora brute.” I ended the call as soon as I saw him—Damian. “You're back early." I said, reaching out to give my husband a hug. “I didn't have much work,” he replied. “Well that's good timing, because I just made dinner.” He gave me a soft smile, then headed for the bathroom. I let out a relieved sigh. “That was close.” During dinner, I couldn't stop smiling at the thought of our sixth anniversary coming up. I was planning a surprise Damian didn't know about. He looked at me with a narrowed gaze. “What is it, you're smiling—smiling too much.” “It's nothing,” I smiled as I asked. “The food… how is it?” To my surprise, he didn't answer. He put down his spoon, then walked inside our room. That was a strange behaviour, and it sparked a feeling of unease in me. I quickly rushed after him. “Are you okay? Are you feeling sick? Was my cooking that bad?” I asked as I tried to place my hands on him—He stepped aside avoiding my touch. My eyes widened. “I’m tired, just let me sleep. You're being noisy.” Damian replied, without even looking my way. “Noisy! I was just trying to see if you're okay, you call that noisy?” I asked, already irritated. “Cassandra!” He called out, his voice pitched slightly high. I was dazed, as he'd never call me that way—(Damian always called me Cassie). What in the world was going on? I exhaled as I lay next to him. Maybe he's just tired, I thought to myself. Damian never acts like this, I was genuinely worried but I shook those feelings away. Over the past few days, Damian's behaviour has been bizarre. He'd leave early for work, without breakfast and when he came home; he'd say he was too exhausted to eat dinner. I knew something was up, but I was certain everything would be okay by tomorrow. Once he saw the surprise I’d been working on it for some time. The next morning, he got out of bed before I could even open my eyes. He didn’t even care to give me my morning kiss. “You're leaving for work, you'll be back early right.” I asked, in a slightly groggy voice as my eyes fluttered open. He was already dressed up. Damian nodded, before leaving for work. I was so excited, because it was our anniversary. Anxiously waiting the whole day, I couldn’t wait for him to return. Hours had passed, I tried calling Damian again, for the twelfth time. But no response. I stood in my red velvet dress, makeup that highlighted my features; with my hair pulled into a sleek bun. Feeling worried, I peeked around expecting him to make a surprise entrance, but there was nothing. My shoulders slumped as I sighed slowly. I really took a big step, preparing all this only for Damian to not show up. I could feel the tears welled up inside my eyes, but I chose not to let them fall. Back at home I had waited an extra three hours before Damian showed up. “You're late! You said you'd cancel out your schedule. It's our anniversary and…” He exhaled, cutting me off. “Follow me," he said. I scoffed. I was talking—” “Now,” he growled. I rolled my eyes as I trailed behind him. “I don't have much to say, just look at the papers.” He reached for his bag, and brought out a white document. Then he slammed it on the bed—I picked it up. My eyes widened as I read “DIVORCE AGREEMENT.” As I stood up, Damian was tugging at his tie. “What is this about?” I asked, heart pounding in my chest. “You can read, can't you? They're divorce papers.” He replied, without any trace of warmth in his voice—as he took off his suit. “I see that, but what's the point of this? Why are you doing this..?” I asked, with a slightly shaky voice. He scoffed. “How pathetic, you really thought I wasn't going to find out?” He looked me in the eyes, then shook his head. “Cassie you…” He hissed. I could tell he was serious, the expression on his face told me everything. “Damian— is everything okay?” I questioned. “No! just have a seat, let me get you some water.” As I tried to leave, he held my arm firmly. “Why did you do it?” Damian asked. I looked at him confused as ever. “Why did you do it, Cassie? I asked you a question!” “Did you just yell? You just yelled at me…” “Answer the question Cassie!” His tone was clipped. “Answer what exactly? First, you missed our anniversary.” “Second, you bring in divorce papers and now, you keep saying things I don't even understand.” I said, eyes burning with unshed tears. “What are you even talking about? What did I do!” I cried as I spoke. “I’ve connected the dots, Cassie. You're having an affair, aren't you?” His words hit me hard. Damian thought I was cheating! “What— What are you…?” I paused, a low breath escaping my lips. “No. Where did you get that from? You think I’m having an affair?” “You think so low of me?” I added. “Oh, I think so low of you! Yet you're the one who cheated.” He sneered. “How can you say I did that? How can you!” I shook my head in disbelief. “We've been married for six years now—I love you, and most importantly you also love me.” “Why would I ever do something like that to you?” I sobbed uncontrollably. “I love you?” He scoffed bitterly. “You’re mistaken Cassie! “How can I love you when I don't even trust you? It doesn't work that way Cassie, it doesn't.” “Sign the papers.” He insisted I sign the papers before leaving the room, but I wasn't having that. I wasn't going to let our marriage end like this. “You can't just fall out of love for someone, can you..?” He didn’t respond, he just made it clear that we didn’t have anything to talk about until my signature was on the papers. I couldn't sleep a wink throughout the night. Damian didn’t even sleep on the same bed as me. Come to think of it, last night was the first time in six years Damian and I fought. Sure we've had misunderstandings, but yesterday was chaos.’ I thought to myself as I sighed and got out of bed. I went straight to Damian's study, but he wasn't there. “Damian..” I called out, no response. I rushed downstairs, only to find him in the kitchen, making a cup of coffee. “You don't have work today…?” He didn't answer, he took a sip of his coffee—walked past me, like I was invincible. I followed him inside his study. “We didn't get to finish our conversation last night.” “I've said what I had to. Sign the papers, that's it.” He said. “I couldn't sleep last night, and here you are—looking like you hadn't just dropped a bombshell on me.” “You badly want this divorce, huh!” I groaned as he looked at me, his soft brown eyes stared coldly. “You're right! I do want the divorce, so just hurry up and sign the papers.” Damian’s voice was sharp. "Damian— What makes you think I had an affair?" I asked, expression subtle. "Ridiculous! You're seriously asking me that right now?" He replied. "Okay, fine. I'll fill you in.” He looked at me. “Cassie, you're my wife, or at least you were.” “And married women, don't behave the way you've been behaving." What the heck was he talking about? "And what exactly is that supposed to mean?" I asked, listening intently. He heaved a sigh. "Forget it. This isn't worth it." He turned away from me. "You were being disrespectful," I said. Damian didn't respond. "Calling me a cheater is disrespectful," I added. He walked up to me slowly, standing mere inches away. Damian looked down at me—his eyes locked on mine, before letting out a brief laugh. "In case you didn't know, having an affair is what's disrespectful.” He said, his voice low. He took a sip of his coffee, before walking off. What was wrong with Damian? Why was he accusing me of having an affair? And wouldn’t he be straightforward with me about it?
