THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

293 Words
The cold night air hit my face as I stepped outside, but it did nothing to numb the pain inside me. Rejected. Humiliated. Alone. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to hold back the sob threatening to escape. “Pathetic.” I froze. The voice came from behind me. Slowly, I turned. Kael stood there. Of course. Even after everything, he still followed me. “What do you want?” I asked, my voice breaking despite my effort to stay strong. His eyes scanned my face, lingering on the tears I couldn’t fully hide. “You’re still my responsibility until the bond completely breaks,” he said. I laughed bitterly. “Don’t pretend you care.” His jaw tightened. “I don’t,” he replied coldly. That should have hurt. But somehow… I was too tired to feel anything anymore. “Then leave me alone.” I turned to walk away, but his hand suddenly grabbed my wrist. The contact sent a strange spark through my body. My heart skipped. Damn the mate bond. “Let go,” I whispered. For a moment, he didn’t. His grip tightened slightly, his eyes darkening as if something conflicted within him. Then suddenly— He pulled me closer. My breath caught. “Kael—” Before I could finish, his lips crashed against mine. My mind went blank. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Not after the rejection. Not after everything. But my body betrayed me, responding to him in ways I hated. The mate bond was still there. Still pulling me toward him. “Stop…” I whispered weakly. But he didn’t. That night… Everything crossed a line that should never have been crossed. And by morning— Nothing would ever be the same again.
