“Don’t come closer.”
My voice came out lower than I expected, but it still carried enough firmness.
They didn’t stop.
Instead, they moved forward slowly.
Carefully.
Like predators closing in on their prey.
My heart pounded harder as I stepped back instinctively, my body reacting before my mind could fully process everything.
“You don’t have to do this,” I said, trying to steady my breathing.
One of them let out a short laugh.
“We don’t get paid to think,” he replied.
Paid.
The word echoed in my mind.
This was planned.
Not just by anyone.
But by someone with power.
Someone with influence.
My hand moved unconsciously to my stomach.
Fear gripped me tighter.
I couldn’t risk anything happening.
Not now.
Not like this.
I kept stepping back slowly, my eyes locked on them.
“Stop,” I warned again.
But they didn’t.
They kept coming.
Closer.
Closer.
Until—
My foot hit something.
I froze.
Slowly, I turned my head.
The edge.
A drop just behind me.
Not deep enough to kill.
But dangerous enough to hurt.
To lose control.
My breathing became uneven.
“No more running,” one of them said.
My options disappeared instantly.
Fight?
Impossible.
Run?
Nowhere to go.
My heart pounded violently as I made a decision.
A risky one.
A desperate one.
I took one last step back…
And let myself fall.
