Kael didn’t respond immediately.
But I felt it.
The shift.
The air in the room changed, growing heavier, colder, like something invisible had snapped between us.
He took a slow step closer, his presence overwhelming even in my weakened state.
“If you walk out of here,” he said, his voice low and controlled, “things will change.”
I held his gaze, refusing to look away.
“They already have,” I replied.
His eyes darkened, something dangerous flickering beneath the surface.
“You don’t understand what you’re starting.”
“Then maybe it’s time I do,” I said.
The tension between us tightened, pulling tighter with every second that passed.
“You’re forcing my hand,” he continued.
“And you forced mine first.”
Silence.
Heavy. Final.
Then—
“Fine.”
The word came out sharper than expected.
It made my chest tighten slightly, but I didn’t let it show.
“If you want to leave,” he said, his tone colder now, more distant, “then leave.”
For a brief second, I hesitated.
Not because I doubted my decision…
But because it felt too easy.
And nothing with Kael was ever that simple.
“But understand this,” he added, stepping even closer, his voice dropping dangerously low, “once you step out of this pack…”
His gaze locked onto mine, intense and unyielding.
“You don’t come back the same.”
A chill ran through me.
But I didn’t move.
“I wasn’t planning to,” I said quietly.
Something in his expression shifted.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Something deeper.
Something darker.
“Then go,” he said.
The words sounded simple.
But they carried weight.
Finality.
A line drawn between us that neither of us could cross again.
I turned slowly, ignoring the pain that shot through my body as I took my first step forward.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
But I didn’t stop.
Because this time…
I meant it.
And behind me, I could feel his gaze still on me.
Watching.
Waiting.
As if this wasn’t the end…
But the beginning of something neither of us could control.
Something bigger.
Something darker.
Something that felt dangerously close to war.
