FRAGILE

Everything hurt. Even breathing felt like a struggle. My chest rose slowly, unevenly, as I tried to focus on something—anything—that would keep me grounded. “What… happened…” I whispered weakly. My voice barely came out. But he heard it. Kael moved closer immediately. “You’re safe,” he said. The words felt familiar. But this time… They didn’t feel convincing. My hand moved instinctively to my stomach. Fear hit me instantly. “…the baby…” Silence. My heart dropped. “Kael…” I whispered again, panic rising in my chest. His jaw tightened slightly. “They’re checking,” he said. That wasn’t enough. That wasn’t an answer. “Tell me,” I said, my voice trembling. For a moment, he didn’t speak. Then— “They don’t know yet.” I closed my eyes briefly, relief and fear mixing together. I didn’t know which one was stronger. “You shouldn’t have been there,” he said suddenly. My eyes opened again. Confusion turned into frustration. “What?” I asked weakly. “I told you to be careful.” “I was set up,” I replied. “I know.” “Then why are you saying it like that?” I asked. Silence. His expression shifted slightly. “This shouldn’t have happened.” “But it did,” I said. And that was the truth neither of us could ignore.
