TOO CLOSE

I tried to avoid him the next day. It wasn’t easy. Kael’s presence was everywhere — in the halls, in the courtyard, even in the silence that followed me around. And somehow, no matter where I went, I felt like his eyes were always on me. “Alpha is looking for you.” I froze at the guard’s words. “Tell him I’m busy,” I replied quickly. “He said it wasn’t optional.” Of course he did. With a sigh, I turned and made my way toward his office, my heart already beating faster than it should. I knocked once before entering. Kael stood by the window, his back facing me. “You called for me?” He turned slowly, his gaze locking onto mine. “You’ve been avoiding me.” “I’ve been resting,” I replied. “Lying doesn’t suit you.” My jaw tightened. “What do you want?” Instead of answering, he walked toward me. Slowly. Deliberately. My breath caught as he stopped right in front of me, too close for comfort. “You’re not taking this seriously,” he said. “I am,” I snapped. “I just don’t need you controlling every step I take.” His eyes darkened. “This isn’t about control,” he said. “Then what is it?” I challenged. For a moment, he didn’t answer. But the way he looked at me… Made my heart race.
