“You look comfortable.”
I didn’t need to turn to know who it was.
Alina.
Her voice was calm, but there was something sharp hidden underneath.
“I’m just trying to live peacefully,” I replied.
She stepped closer, her heels clicking softly against the floor.
“Peacefully?” she repeated. “In a place that was never meant for you?”
I turned to face her, keeping my expression neutral.
“I didn’t ask to be here.”
“No,” she agreed. “But you’re taking advantage of it.”
Her eyes dropped briefly to my stomach.
“And that.”
My hand instinctively moved to protectively rest there.
“This isn’t something you get to use,” she continued coldly. “A child doesn’t make you important.”
Anger flared inside me, but I held it back.
“I’m not trying to take anything from you,” I said.
Her lips curved into a faint smile.
“That’s funny,” she said softly. “Because it feels like you already are.”
Before I could respond, she stepped even closer, lowering her voice.
“Let me give you a warning,” she whispered.
My body tensed.
“This pack has rules,” she continued. “And people like you don’t get happy endings here.”
Then she stepped back, her expression returning to calm.
As if she hadn’t just threatened me.
And for the first time…
I realized just how far she was willing to go.
