Something was changing.
I could feel it.
Not just in the way people looked at me…
But in the way Kael treated me.
It wasn’t just about the child anymore.
At least, it didn’t feel like it.
“You didn’t eat again.”
I sighed, turning to face him.
“You really need to stop showing up uninvited.”
“And you need to start listening,” he replied.
I crossed my arms. “Why do you care so much?”
The question hung in the air.
This time, he didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he stepped closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he was trying not to scare me away.
“I don’t repeat myself,” he said quietly.
“That’s not an answer.”
His gaze softened slightly.
Just a little.
“It doesn’t have to be.”
My heart skipped.
That wasn’t like him.
Not at all.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
The air between us felt different.
Heavy.
Charged.
Dangerous.
Then suddenly, he reached out, his hand brushing lightly against mine.
I froze.
The contact was brief.
But it sent a strange feeling through my body.
And just like that, he stepped back.
As if nothing had happened.
But I knew better.
Because something had changed.
And whatever it was…
It was only going to make things more complicated.
