The words followed me like shadows as I walked through the courtyard, my steps quickening without realizing it.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“You’ve been avoiding people,” he said.
I almost laughed.
“People aren’t exactly welcoming,” I replied.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“That will change.”
I shook my head.
“No, it won’t.”
He stepped closer, closing the distance between us.
“It will,” he said quietly.
“And if it doesn’t?” I challenged.
His eyes darkened, his voice dropping just enough to make my heart skip.
“Then I’ll make it.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
Because the way he said it…
It didn’t sound like a promise.
It sounded like a warning.
