“You shouldn’t be walking alone.”
I didn’t turn.
“I’m not a prisoner,” I replied.
Kael stepped beside me anyway, his presence impossible to ignore.
“You’re not safe,” he said.
A quiet, bitter laugh escaped my lips.
“I wasn’t safe before either.”
He didn’t respond immediately, but I could feel his gaze on me.
“I won’t let anything happen to you,” he said after a moment.
I stopped walking.
“Why?” I asked, turning to face him fully this time.
His expression didn’t change.
“You’re under my protection.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Silence stretched between us, thick and uncomfortable.
Then he stepped closer.
Too close.
“You’re in my territory,” he said.
My heart skipped.
“And that means what?” I asked, refusing to step back.
His voice dropped slightly.
“It means no one touches what’s mine.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
“I’m not yours,” I said quickly.
Something flashed in his eyes.
Something sharp.
“Keep telling yourself that,” he replied.
Then he walked past me without another word.
Leaving me standing there…
Confused.
Because deep down…
I wasn’t sure if I believed myself anymore.
