SHAKING

222 Words
My legs gave out the moment they were gone. I didn’t even realize how much I was shaking until I couldn’t stand anymore. Before I hit the ground— Kael caught me. Again. His arms wrapped around me, steady and firm, holding me in place. “You’re safe,” he said. His voice was different. Softer. But still tense. I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. My body was still trying to process everything that had just happened. “They didn’t hurt you, did they?” he asked. I shook my head weakly. But the fear remained. Heavy. Unshaken. His grip tightened slightly. “I told you not to walk alone,” he said. There was frustration in his voice now. Anger. But not at me. “At least I’m still alive,” I muttered. That made him go still. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then— “You shouldn’t have been in that area,” he said. “I didn’t know—” “You should have known,” he cut in. I pulled away slightly, my chest tightening. “Don’t do that,” I said. “Do what?” “Act like this is my fault.” Silence. Then his expression shifted. Slightly. “I didn’t say it was your fault,” he said. “You didn’t have to.”
