“This wasn’t random.”
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
Kael didn’t respond immediately.
But I saw it.
That brief flicker in his eyes.
He knew.
“You know something,” I said.
His jaw tightened.
“This isn’t something you need to worry about.”
Anger flared instantly.
“I was just chased!” I snapped. “I think I deserve to know what’s going on!”
His expression hardened.
“You’re safe now.”
“That’s not the point!”
Silence filled the space.
Heavy.
Tense.
“Someone sent them,” I continued, my voice lower now. “Didn’t they?”
He didn’t deny it.
And that was enough.
My heart dropped.
“Who?” I asked.
He looked at me.
Really looked this time.
Like he was deciding something.
Then—
“You don’t need to know.”
Frustration burned inside me.
“I do!” I insisted.
“No,” he said firmly. “You don’t.”
I stared at him, disbelief and anger mixing together.
“You expect me to just ignore this?”
“I expect you to stay safe.”
“That’s not the same thing!”
Silence again.
Then—
“Trust me,” he said.
The words hit differently.
Not because of what they meant.
But because of who said them.
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then shook my head.
“I don’t know if I can.”
And for the first time…
He didn’t have a response.
