RUN OR TO BE TAKEN

415 Words
Branches snapped beneath our feet as we ran. Fast. Too fast for me to keep up. My breath came in short, uneven bursts, my chest burning as I struggled to match Kael’s pace. “Faster,” he said, pulling me along. “I’m trying,” I gasped. The forest blurred around me, shadows stretching and shifting like they were alive, like they were closing in on us. Behind us— That sound. Closer now. Louder. Not just one. Multiple. My heart pounded violently. “They’re gaining,” I said, panic creeping into my voice. Kael didn’t respond. But his grip on my hand tightened. We pushed through a cluster of trees, the ground uneven beneath my feet, roots catching at my steps. I stumbled. Hard. A sharp pain shot up my leg as I nearly fell. But Kael caught me before I hit the ground. “Stay up,” he said firmly. “I can’t keep—” “Yes, you can,” he cut in. There was no room for argument in his voice. Only urgency. Only command. And somehow— That pushed me forward. We kept running. Deeper. Further. Until suddenly— Kael stopped. So abruptly that I almost crashed into him again. “What—?” “Quiet,” he whispered. My breath was still heavy, my heart racing as I tried to listen past the sound of my own panic. And then I heard it. Nothing. The noise behind us had stopped. Completely. “That’s not good,” I whispered. Kael’s expression darkened. “No,” he said. “It’s not.” A low sound echoed nearby. Not from behind. From the side. They had surrounded us. My chest tightened as fear surged through me again. “What do we do now?” I asked. Kael didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped slightly in front of me again. Protecting me. Always protecting me—despite everything. “Stay behind me,” he said. Before I could respond— The creatures emerged. Closer than before. More of them. Their glowing eyes fixed directly on me. Not Kael. Me. My breath caught. “They’re not here for you…” I whispered. Kael didn’t deny it. The heat inside me flared suddenly. Stronger. Wilder. Uncontrolled. The creatures froze again. Just like before. But this time— It didn’t feel like fear. It felt like recognition. And that terrified me even more. Because whatever I was becoming… It was something they already knew. 😈🔥
