THE POWER I COULDN'T HIDE

475 Words
The creature didn’t move. Not even a step. Its glowing eyes stayed locked on me, its body frozen like something invisible was holding it back. My heart pounded violently in my chest. I hadn’t done anything. At least… I didn’t think I had. “Kael…” I whispered, my voice unsteady. He didn’t answer. But I felt his attention shift immediately. From the creatures— To me. And that was when I knew something was wrong. “Don’t move,” he said slowly. But his voice wasn’t just a warning. It carried something else. Something close to disbelief. The creature in front of me let out a low, uneasy sound, its body trembling slightly as it took a step back. Back. Not forward. Fear crept into my chest. Not because it was coming toward me— But because it wasn’t. “Why is it backing away?” I asked. Kael didn’t respond immediately. Another creature growled from the side, more aggressive, less hesitant. It lunged toward him again. This time, Kael didn’t hold back. He shifted fully, his wolf emerging with raw power as he attacked without hesitation. The force of his movement sent the creature crashing into a tree. But even as he fought— I could feel it. That strange heat inside me. Growing stronger. Spreading. My hand moved instinctively to my stomach, my breath catching as the sensation pulsed beneath my palm. Alive. Powerful. Wrong. Another creature tried to move toward me— But stopped again. Just like the first. Its body lowered, not in attack… But in submission. My heart skipped. “That’s not possible…” Kael’s voice came from behind me. I turned slightly, my eyes meeting his. Even in his wolf form— I could see it. Shock. Real shock. “What is happening to me?” I asked. This time, he didn’t look away. Instead, he stepped closer, his expression dark and unreadable. “That…” he said slowly, “is exactly what I was trying to protect you from.” My chest tightened. “What do you mean?” But before he could answer— A loud, unnatural howl echoed through the forest. Different from the others. Stronger. Commanding. The creatures around us reacted instantly, their bodies going still before retreating back into the darkness. Just like that. Gone. Silence followed. Heavy. Unnatural. My heart was still racing as I looked around. “They’re gone…” I whispered. But Kael didn’t relax. If anything— He looked more tense than before. “They didn’t run,” he said quietly. I frowned. “Then what did they do?” His gaze lifted toward the darkness ahead. “They were called back.” A chill ran through me. Because that only meant one thing. Something else was out there. Something stronger. And somehow… It was connected to me. 😈🔥
