THE TRUTH HE TRIED TO HIDE

515 Words
The silence that followed was worse than the fight. Because now— There were questions. Too many of them. And I could feel it in the way Kael stood beside me, his body still tense, his gaze fixed on the darkness like he was expecting something else to come out of it. “You’re going to explain,” I said. My voice was quiet. But firm. He didn’t answer immediately. That alone irritated me. “You knew,” I added. “You knew something like this could happen.” His jaw tightened slightly. “That’s why you rejected me, isn’t it?” I pressed. Still nothing. The frustration in my chest grew stronger. “Say something, Kael.” He exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair before finally looking at me. “This wasn’t supposed to happen yet,” he said. That wasn’t an answer. “That’s not what I asked.” “I know.” “Then stop avoiding it.” Silence. Again. But this time, it didn’t last as long. “They’re not normal wolves,” he said finally. “I figured that.” “They’re controlled.” That made me pause. “Controlled? By who?” He didn’t answer. My chest tightened. “Kael.” His gaze hardened slightly. “There are things you don’t understand yet.” “That’s because you refuse to tell me,” I snapped. Something in his expression shifted at that. Frustration. Conflict. Guilt. “You weren’t supposed to be involved in this,” he said. “I already am,” I replied. “So stop treating me like I’m not.” Silence followed. But this time— It felt different. He was thinking. Deciding. And I knew whatever came next… Would change everything. “You felt it, didn’t you?” he asked suddenly. I froze. “The heat,” he continued. “The way they reacted to you.” My hand moved instinctively to my stomach again. “Yes,” I said slowly. His gaze dropped briefly to the same spot. And that was when I saw it. Not just concern. Not just tension. Fear. Real fear. “That’s not supposed to happen,” he muttered. My heart skipped. “What isn’t?” He looked back at me. And for the first time— There was no control in his expression. Only truth. “That power,” he said quietly, “shouldn’t exist anymore.” A chill ran through me. “What are you talking about?” He didn’t hesitate this time. “It means,” he said, his voice low, “you’re not just carrying a child.” My breath caught. “You’re carrying something they’ve been searching for.” The words hit me like a shock. My chest tightened. “Who is ‘they’?” Kael’s gaze darkened. “The ones who just found you.” And just like that— Everything became real. This wasn’t just about rejection anymore. This wasn’t just about survival. This was something bigger. Something dangerous. And somehow— It had been waiting for me all along. 😈🔥
