A PROMISE HE CAN'T KEEP

“I can protect you.” Kael’s voice was steady, almost commanding. Like he expected me to believe him. Like he expected that to be enough. But it wasn’t. Not anymore. “You couldn’t even protect me before,” I said quietly. The words settled between us, sharp and unforgiving. His expression darkened immediately. “That won’t happen again,” he said. “You don’t know that.” “I do.” I shook my head slightly, ignoring the dull ache in my body. “No,” I replied. “You don’t.” Because if there was one thing I had learned… It was that strength didn’t guarantee control. And power didn’t guarantee safety. “She won’t stop,” I continued. His jaw tightened. “I’ll deal with her.” “You should have already done that.” Silence. That same silence that always followed when the truth got too close. “You care about her,” I said. His eyes flickered, just for a second. But I saw it. And that was enough. “It’s complicated,” he said. I let out a soft, humorless laugh. “It’s not complicated,” I replied. “It’s just inconvenient.” His gaze hardened. “You don’t understand the position I’m in.” “Then help me understand,” I said. Another pause. Another silence. And once again— Nothing. That was the problem. He always had reasons. Excuses. But never answers. And I was tired of it.
