I didn’t even get the chance to respond.
The moment I turned away from him, ready to walk deeper into the unknown, a sudden force wrapped around my wrist and pulled me back.
Hard.
My breath caught as my back hit something solid.
Warm.
Familiar.
Dangerous.
“Did you really think I would let you go that easily?”
Kael’s voice was low, right beside my ear.
My heart skipped violently.
“You said I could leave,” I said, trying to steady my voice despite how close he was.
“I said you could try,” he replied.
I turned to face him, anger rising quickly.
“That’s not what you meant.”
“And yet, here we are.”
His grip on my wrist tightened slightly—not enough to hurt, but enough to remind me that he was still in control.
“I told you not to follow me,” I said.
“And I told you that you’re not safe,” he shot back.
“I can take care of myself.”
His eyes darkened at that.
“No,” he said firmly. “You can’t.”
The confidence in his voice irritated me.
“I survived this long without you,” I snapped.
“Barely,” he replied.
That hit harder than I expected.
Before I could respond—
A sudden sound echoed through the forest.
Sharp.
Unfamiliar.
Kael’s expression changed instantly.
His body tensed, his grip on me tightening as he pulled me slightly behind him.
“Stay close,” he said.
His tone wasn’t controlling this time.
It was serious.
Alert.
“What is that?” I asked, my voice quieter now.
He didn’t answer immediately.
His gaze scanned the darkness, sharp and calculating.
“Something that shouldn’t be this close to our territory,” he said.
My chest tightened.
Another sound.
Closer now.
Faster.
And then—
Shadows moved between the trees.
Not wolves.
Not from the pack.
Something else.
Something wrong.
I felt it instantly.
The air shifted, heavy with a presence I didn’t understand.
“Kael…” I whispered.
He stepped slightly in front of me, his body shielding mine without hesitation.
“Whatever happens,” he said quietly, “don’t run.”
My heart pounded.
Because the way he said it—
Didn’t sound like a warning.
It sounded like a promise.
And for the first time…
I realized leaving hadn’t taken me away from danger.
It had brought me closer to something much worse. 😈🔥
