The Fair Over the next few years, life on the moor remained much the same, except for the reopening of Dartmoor Prison. It had been empty for many years, but now it was used as a prison for the worst criminals. For many, who were locked away behind those cold walls, it was their worst nightmare. The people of the moor had their own nightmares. Hauntings, goods stolen or damaged; the spectral riders continued their ravings and on occasion the baying of the hound drifted across the landscape, sending shivers down the spines of all who heard it. Some severe winters happened in the fifties. Men lost their lives to the cold and snow. At least, local folk preferred that to be the reason and not some supernatural event.
