Chapter1
Twinkling lights on the grand ballroom made one's eyes think of the stars hanging in the sky above. Laughter and music hummed throughout the room, champagne and rose-scented air. The annual Billionaire's Ball was the most exquisite, elite gala of the year. It was the crème de la crème of society who had gathered here tonight, and each one determined to outdo the others in this dazzling display of wealth and sophistication. Standing at the edge of the ballroom, Alex Jones a man worthy of attention in his own right. He had those sculpted features and piercing blue eyes that seemed to cut right through a sea of blandness. His dark hair was perfectly placed, and his tailored tuxedo fit him like a charm. Being one of the richest men in the world, Alex was used to getting what he wanted. In business, he showed no mercy and ensured his opponents were crushed, and that was how his reputation had been built. Still, beneath the tough exterior lay a certain vulnerability in him, which not very many saw. Asher's eyes scanned the room, lingering on women of beauty vying for his attention. He had a lot of money, power, prestige. In amidst all these proofs of his success, he could not get rid of this nagging feeling that he was missing out on something. Just at that moment, a soft voice pierced through his muses. "Alex Jones, I presume?" Alex turned to see a stunning woman standing in front of him , wearing a beautiful red gown. It suited her body perfectly. "Yes," Asher replied, his voice low and smooth. "And are you?" "I'm Lily William," she replied, her smile brightening the room. "It's an honor to meet you, Mr. Jones." Alex’s eyes slightly narrowed as he regarded the innocent mien of Lily. The room filled with socialites, he suddenly had a desire to get to know her. "The pleasure is mine, Miss Lily," Alex returned with his most charming tone of voice. "May I have this dance?" Lily's eyes flashed, and she nodded as Alex took her hand firmly but with gentleness onto the dancing floor. The music swelled, and they moved in perfect rhythm. Alex felt the softness of her hand in his, the quiet confidence in her presence. As they swayed across the dance floor, he couldn't help but speculate on why Lily approached him.“Not to question my good fortune,” Alex said, as they turned gracefully to the music, “but why did you come up to me? I doubt it was just for a dance.” "You're right," she acknowledged. I wanted to speak with you. Your name came up recently at an event I was attending, a fundraiser for community literacy programs. Your company was listed as one of the major donors.” Alex raised an eyebrow. “I don’t typically handle charity events personally. That’s more my PR team’s domain. But I’m glad the work caught your attention.” “It did,” Lily said with a smile. What struck me wasn't just the donation, it was how specific it was. The funding was earmarked for programs in underprivileged neighborhoods. I grew up in one of those neighborhoods, Mr. Jones. That kind of support changes lives.” Her words hit Alex harder than he expected. Beneath her composed exterior, he could sense her sincerity, her passion for the cause. It wasn’t flattery ,it was conviction. “So you walked up to me because you wanted to thank me?” he asked, his tone laced with curiosity. “Not just thank you,” she said, holding his gaze. “I wanted to understand you. The man behind the reputation. People like you don’t usually focus on causes like this. I wanted to know why.” Alex chuckled softly, more to himself than to her. “And did you expect a specific answer?” Lily shook her head. “I didn’t come with expectations. I came with curiosity.” Her honesty caught Alex off guard. She wasn’t like anyone else in the room, and he found himself wanting to give her the answer she deserved. The dance continued, with Alex’s attention slowly taken by Lily's soft voice and her real manner. She spoke of being a librarian, the love for stories that whisked her away into worlds, and how the simple things in her life were the most fun. Her words spoke of a person so real yet full of wonder, so different from the world Alex had created. Alex, however, was all ambition and control put together a self-made billionaire, he had literally clawed to the top by sheer will and determination. He had an empire that spread across lands, his influence unparalleled, and with a reputation of being a business executive who knew no mercy. When the last strains of music faded away in the ballroom, Alex allowed his hand to linger on hers before he inclined his head. "Thank you for the dance, Miss Lily ," he said in a low tone that held an unexpected softness within its depths. "It was a pleasure. Lily met his gaze, her lips curving into a smile it felt like a secret they only shared. "The pleasure was mine, Mr. Jones," she replied, her tone teasing yet sincere. "Perhaps our paths will cross again? Alex’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t a man who believed in serendipity, but something about Lily made him question that certainty. Still, he held his composure, his voice measured. “I’d like that,” he said. “Until next time, Miss Lily.” He watched her turn and walk away, the red gown swaying with each step. For just a moment, the buzzing of the ballroom faded, and he had only the quiet hum of his thoughts to keep him company. Something tugged in his chest, an ache, a pang, a regret that he would never have her number, wouldn't find a way to yoke this moment to something larger. His turn towards the bar, he had become lost in thought when a tap on the shoulder got his attention. Whirling to find Lily's sparkling eyes at eye level with his own, their emerald sheen was so sparkling it rivaled the shine on polished emeralds. In her hand was a piece of paper. "I thought you might need this," she said; Asher stared at the paper a second before he took it, the warmth of her fingertips brushed against his. On it was her phone number, in neat, hurried script. He felt his chest tighten as he looked back at her. "Thanks," he said, his voice steady but lower, more personal. It wasn't just gratitude for the amount, it was for the second chance she was offering, for the way she seemed to understand something about him he didn't even fully grasp. Lily smiled. "Goodnight, Mr. Jones," she said, turning and melting back into the crowd. Alex stood there, holding the paper like a lifeline. Still lost in his musings, Alex felt a hand on his shoulder. It was his business partner, Marcus. Marcus was tall, imposing with a chiseled jawline and piercing brown eyes. He was Alex’s right-hand man, and the two of them had built their business empire from scratch. "Alex, we need to talk," Marcus said in a low, urgent voice. Alex turned to him, his mind still on Lily. "What is it?" he asked distractedly. "It's about the Smithson deal," he replied. "I just got word that they are pulling out." Alex’s eyes narrowed. "What? Impossible. We had a deal." "I know," Marcus said. "But apparently, they've had a change of heart. They're saying that they can't afford to take on the risk." Alex’s face darkened. “No way,” he intoned, a growl in his voice. “There’s more to this besides.” Marcus nodded. "I agree. We need to do some digging and see what this is about." Alex nodded. He was already thinking about how it would be realized when he said ‘Begin working on it’. ‘I want to know what is going on.’ Marcus nodded and began to walk away. Alex’s eyes started to search the room for Lily. Over the other side of the room, across the hall, she was there, engaged in lively conversation with others with a lot of laughter emanating from her. A wave of desire coursed through Alex's mind to get over there and grab hold of her. But he knew he couldn't yet, anyway. Instead, he turned and walked back toward the bar, getting himself a whiskey on the way. He sipped, the sting of the liquor cascading down. He stood there, sipping his drink and watching Lily from across the room, feeling a sense of excitement he hadn't experienced in a very long time. And it was all because of Lily. The whole evening, Alex remained in the same disposition to glance in her direction. So drawn was he by a sparkling eye and bright smile. And finally, the music finished playing. These were the eternity minutes and the hall illumination worked again. Alex approached her, feeling in his chest anticipation. "Lily," his deep husky voice said. "It was marvelous meeting you tonight." Lily looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with mirth. "The pleasure was mine, Mr. Jones," she returned. Alex felt overwhelmed in his heart as he bit back a wave of desire. Kiss her, sweep her into your arms, and never let go. He knew he could not. At least, he could not do so yet. Instead, he smiled and bowed low over her hand. "Until next time, Miss lily," he said. Lily smiled and nodded, and Alex turned and walked away, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation building in his chest. He knew that he would see Lily again. And next time, he wouldn't let her get away so easily.
