A light gentle wind touched my face and the good mixed smell of foods reached my nostrils from the house. I smiled at the thought of Melissa calling my name for lunch. She will surely do it, as usual.
The strong wind hover my shawl that fell on my shoulder and let alone feel the cool air again and again. Life. I’m feeling safe right now. The shade of the tree covers me from the light of the sun. no harm would come before me from where I am standing right now.
I looked at the sky and smile as my natural frozen blonde hair dances with the air.
“Heather! Time for lunch, c’mon now!”
The smile on my face immediately faded as I turn around to look at Melissa who is standing right outside of the two storey bricked house. With alertness and realization, I wrapped my shawl around my head to cover my face and ran to Melissa who smiled at me.
“So, how was it?”
She asked pertaining to the place.
“It’s perfect” I answered with a smile taking my step towards the door and so Melissa too.
I hover to the chair beside Jax, Melissa’s son and gave him a modest look. He gave me a smile before he spoke.
“So Heather, would you like to go with me at the megalopolis?” He asked and started eating the food on his plate without notion and etceteras. Megalopolis is the city they call around 5 miles away from here. He glances at me and I shook my head. Jax is one year older than me. He has curls with midnight black and dark brown eyes. He has an athletic physique and good features.
I started eating when I felt Melissa’s eyes on me. I know she felt sorry for me that I have to abide all the rules and lock myself from people. It’s the right thing to do.
I heard the clinging of jax’s spoon and fork on the plate as he stopped eating.
“Oh, c’mon! Mom, can you let Heather go out sometimes? This is too much” Jax exclaimed as if he was discriminated on his place. I silently laughed at how Jax said those words about me abandoning the world which is actually fine. I’m used to it.
“You know it’s dangerous” She reprimanded Jax and both of us a raising brow.
“And where do you think is the safe place? Here----“
I nudge Jax’s shoulder and gave him a look. “Stop that! I’m fine” I glared at him and tried to focus on my food.
“No. You are not”
I straightened up and gave him a more resilient look. We just moved from a small village in New York. I lived there with my Aunt Melissa and Jax. The houses are literally connected with each other so it is hard for us to keep private. It was an urban-Gemeinschaft community.
Something terrible happened so we have to move out without telling our neighbors. In order for them to forget our existence and what happened, Melissa used some excuses, good excuses. They believed. My set-up in our new house somehow protect me from dangers and destroy something on the process and would cover me from giving passers a hint of who I am. Which, I don’t exactly know what my kind is.
Jax ignored me and faced his mother. Argh! This man!
“She is already 23 years old, let her live her life. She can’t be like this forever hiding in the dark wearing hoods or coat what s**t you call that. She think better than anyone. For sure, she can handle herself”
“Jax---“
“Can you?” I was taken back by Melissa’s words. The last time I gone out of my shell, horrible things happened. I don’t want to go out again. It could be a warning.
I appreciated Jax’s words even though he is near in fuming mad. Yeah, he just spit a swear word.
“I don’t want to go out” I continuously shook my head, disagreeing.
“Heath---“
“Again, I’m fine Jax” I made sure it was the best words to end the conversation. The topic surprised and gave me the uncomfortable feeling at the same time.
He sighed and began swallowing his meal again. The offer is tempting but no thanks.
I drop the dress on my the bed and headed to the door when I heard Jax knocking. He gave me a big smile when I finally opened it for him.
“What is it this time?”
I raised my brow at him.
“My wolf wants to do a little run outside around the woods. Wanna go with me?” Jax is a werewolf. Obviously, he shifts into a big monster wolf. His wolfy is a brown monster. It is twice as big as me but it is so adorable. The total opposite of Jax.
Another offer. I saw the playful look on his eyes. Uhh, I see something fishy.
“if you were not my cousin, I would actually throw you in a cliff right now. Stop annoying me”
“Just in the woods” He clamped the door open when I was about to close it. I rolled my eyes.
“Just in the woods” I repeated and he nod.
Just in the woods.
Thankfully, it was actually just in the woods. I turned around looking at the big trees around me. This place is really isolated. I wouldn’t think of any reason why Melissa chose to stay here. No other houses, buildings and even post office, no screeching cars and noisy neighbors.
This place is awesome. All you can hear is the tweeting of birds and noises from wild little animals. Who would ever think that such sanctuary exists?
“Heather!”
I turned at Jax who is now standing in a big log. He spread his arms like welcoming me in the forest. I laughed at his cocky gesture. I ran to him and jump unto the log.
“Wow! This place is amazing, who own this?”
Jax shrugged his shoulder. “No one.”
“Even the house?”
He jumped off the log and helped me made my way down.
“It’s ours” He messed my hair and pinched my cheek.
I pout then gave him a deadly look. He just started walking around.
“I thought you’ll going to have your run?”
“Yeah”
I followed him. He walked and walked while here I am, following him like a turtle and holding the bottom part of my coat so I won’t get disturbed by horning plants.
“Jax, show me your wolf!” I shouted at him like a child wanting a candy. I grabbed his arm and pulled him like a child. I pouted when he faced me.
“You look like a duck”
My eyes grew wide with his words. He did not right?
“People said I’m pretty” I said defending myself and not being a narcissist. He didn’t stopped walking but laughed hard. Okay, what’s funny?
“Says who?”
“People”
He didn’t answer. He just laughed and laughed.
“Funny” I said in a cold tone. He immediately stopped laughing and tried to suppress it.
“Sorry. It was just…Ahem” He covered his mouth to stop himself from laughing.
“So, this is your run?” I crossed my arms at him and gave him a sassy look. I should have known that he will just make fun of me so I could have saved my time reading books in my room.
“I am going to---shh”
He pulled me behind. I saw him sniffing in the air like a dog. He is actually a dog, no, a wolf. I recalled the shh which is so much confusing. He wad the one who is laughing, making fun of me and threw noises around.
At first, I don’t know why he did that just before I heard a loud growl from somewhere around us.
“Jax, something is with us” I told him. 'Something' and not someone. Obviously, another wolf. Argh! Don't give me another one. I'm fine with seeing two in my life. Melissa and Jax.
I saw him scrunched his nose.
“Obviously” He said in annoyance.
I rolled my eyes and wear back my hood. Not the right time to show off, though. I removed my gloves (just in case) when I heard another growl. I turned looking around the trees but see nothing. Where does it come from? It sound meters away from us. I think it wants to play hide and seek. Oh, how I missed that game. Anyways, there is still nothing that my eyes met for this moment.
“Do you see him?”
“No” I timidly answered still looking around. “Just use a little Jaxy tingle” I teased. Yeah, his Jaxy tingle. That insane sense of smell and hearing.
“I lost the scent”
I was about to ask him how but I stilled on my place as I felt a more subjective and unfamiliar presence.
Before I knew it, I heard a cracking of bones behind me. Jax is shifting. When I turned around, I saw an insanely huge black wolf snarling at Jax wolf guarding me. This wolf is twice as big as Jax’s! No one ever told me in my whole life that this kind of hideous beast exists.
A deep threatening sound came out of Jax’s average wolf and they started circling with each other as I distanced myself from them, waiting for the right moment to lunge at each other. Their canines showing off but undoubtedly, this big black wolf could swallow Jax in his place.
“Jax…” I tried to sound so much like an omnipotent creature but Jax just glanced at me before rushing forward in a sudden way at the big black wolf and to his and my surprise, the wolf suddenly disappeared before our eyes. Jax wolf landed at a blank space. Okay, that was so tricky. My mind whirls at the moment as Jax’s wolf became more vigilant.
I thought it was the best time for us to run just before Jax collides on a big tree out of nowhere. Still, conscious, he tried to stand up and tried to reach me. The pain is almost visible in Jax eyes but he tried to conceal it.
“Jax!” I tried to run at him when I felt another rush but unsuccessfully, something big hitted me and I was blown in the air and fall on the grass. I winced when I felt a sudden pain on my back. I looked at Jax’s wolf trying its best to reach me but he was blown in the air and hit its body on the ground many times of trying to stand up. His lower limbs are already failing him.
A huge freaking invisible wolf is attacking us right now which is not normal. Not normal. I heard a loud thud again causing me to jump off the grass and ran to Jax but I stopped when I felt the attacker’s presence running to me and saw the spreading of dried leaves off its places.
I took the hood off my head slowly flexing my neck and expanding my arms in both sides. Looks like this big bad wolf needs a little lesson. In all I say, the wolf showed up, stopped and goggles.
I flicked my hands in a vigorous manner as I felt a strong force radiates off me and my vision became clearer than before.
“Heather, no!”
I faced Jax who is now in his human form with bruises, naked sitting on the bottom side of a huge tree. I motioned my hand in the air and a pile of dried leaves covered Jax nudeness. I already saw him naked multiple times, not new to me anymore. We used to take a bath together when we were just toddlers and when we grew up of course we stopped taking a bath together but he can’t just stop blunting his so called body.
“Stay there or I swear I’m going to let this hideous animal swallow you alive” I warned him when he tried to stand off his feet.
I smirked when I heard the big black wolf snarled at me. Oh, he hates my words. I placed my attention to the wolf in front of me who is now ready to rip me off. I steady and balanced myself then a thick wall of ice covered the whole place.
