Chapter 8: What Stays Unsaid

613 Words
The hospital didn’t feel real. It was too bright. Too quiet in the wrong places. Too loud in others. Arielle sat in the waiting area, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her thoughts running in circles she couldn’t escape. Kael was inside. Alive. But not okay. And somehow… that made everything worse. Because now there was time to think. ⸻ Minutes Felt Like Hours Every second stretched. Every breath felt heavy. Arielle stared at the floor, replaying everything— The argument. The words. The look on Kael’s face before he walked away. Then— The sound. She shut her eyes. “I shouldn’t have let him leave…” she whispered. ⸻ Footsteps She didn’t need to look up to know it was him. Luca. He didn’t rush. Didn’t speak immediately. He just sat beside her. Close— But not too close. ⸻ Silence Between Them It wasn’t awkward. It wasn’t comfortable either. It was… honest. “I called the hospital earlier,” Luca said quietly. “They said he’ll be fine.” Arielle nodded. But her voice didn’t come. Because fine didn’t feel like enough. ⸻ The Conversation That Matters “You went with him,” Luca added. Not accusing. Not questioning. Just… stating it. Arielle finally looked at him. “I couldn’t not go.” “I know.” And that was the problem. He understood too easily. ⸻ Arielle’s Truth “I care about him,” she said softly. The words felt fragile. Like they could break if she said them too loud. Luca didn’t react immediately. But something in his eyes shifted. Barely noticeable— But real. “I know that too.” ⸻ But Then… She inhaled slowly. Like she was preparing herself. “For you… it’s different.” That got his attention. Not shock. Not surprise. Just… focus. “Different how?” he asked. ⸻ The Line She Was Afraid to Cross Arielle looked down again. Because saying it out loud meant it became real. “You don’t make me feel overwhelmed,” she said. “You don’t make me feel like I’m being pulled or pushed.” Her voice softened. “You just… see me.” Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. ⸻ Luca’s Response “That doesn’t mean you’ll choose me.” Straight. Honest. No emotion hiding behind it. Arielle’s chest tightened. “Why would you say that?” “Because,” he looked at her now, fully, “you didn’t hesitate to go with him.” That hurt. Because it was true. ⸻ The Reality Between Them “It wasn’t a choice,” she said quickly. “It was,” Luca replied calmly. “Maybe not a conscious one. But it was still a choice.” She had no answer for that. Because deep down— She knew. ⸻ The Distance Begins Luca stood up. Not angry. Not dramatic. Just… done standing still. “I’m not going to compete with that,” he said. Arielle’s heart dropped. “What does that mean?” “It means,” he paused, “I won’t stay somewhere I feel second.” The First Real Loss “Luca—” She stood too. But he didn’t move closer. Didn’t soften. Didn’t stay. “You should be with him,” he said quietly. “And you should figure out what you actually want… before you lose more than just me.” And Then He Walked Away No shouting. No argument. No scene. Just— Distance. The kind that doesn’t make noise… but changes everything. End Scene Arielle stood there, frozen. Because for the first time— She wasn’t choosing between two people. She was realizing… She might lose one without even trying.
