Chapter Five: The Things We Can’t Ignore

1017 Words
The night air was sharp. Cold enough to bite. But not enough to calm the storm building inside Kael. He stood outside the building, hands in his pockets, jaw tight, eyes dark with something he could no longer ignore. He had waited. Watched. Told himself to leave. But he didn’t. Because tonight… He needed answers. ⸻ The glass doors slid open. And there he was. Luca. Calm. Collected. Unbothered. Like he didn’t just step into something complicated. Like he didn’t just… take something that wasn’t his. Their eyes met instantly. And just like that— The air shifted. Heavy. Electric. Dangerous. Luca paused, studying him. Not surprised. Not nervous. Just… aware. “So,” Luca said smoothly, slipping his hands into his coat pockets. “I was wondering when you’d show up.” Kael let out a quiet, humorless laugh. “Confident.” “Observant.” Silence. But not the quiet kind. This silence had teeth. ⸻ Kael stepped closer. Slow. Measured. “You seem to know a lot,” he said, his voice low. “About things that don’t concern you.” Luca didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. “If you’re talking about Arielle,” he said calmly, “then I think you’re wrong.” That name— Coming from his mouth— Did something to Kael. Something sharp. Something territorial. “You don’t get to say her name like that,” Kael snapped. Luca raised a brow slightly. “Like what?” “Like you know her.” Another pause. Then— “Maybe I do.” That was it. That one sentence— Lit the match. Kael closed the distance between them in seconds. “Listen carefully,” he said, his voice dropping into something dangerous. “You don’t know anything about her.” Luca held his gaze. Unshaken. “And you do?” he asked quietly. The question hit harder than any insult. Because Kael didn’t answer. Couldn’t. Luca tilted his head slightly, studying him. “You stand there like you own her,” he continued, voice calm but cutting. “But from what I’ve seen…” He paused. Then finished softly— “You don’t even understand her.” Silence. Sharp. Brutal. Kael’s hands clenched. “You think sitting with her for a few minutes makes you special?” he shot back. “No,” Luca said simply. “I think listening to her does.” That landed. Deep. Because Kael knew— He hadn’t. Not really. ⸻ “Stay away from her,” Kael said, his voice colder now. Final. Luca’s expression didn’t change. “Or what?” The challenge was quiet. But loud enough. Kael stepped even closer, their shoulders nearly touching. “This isn’t your place.” Luca let out a soft breath. “And maybe that’s the problem,” he said. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “What is that supposed to mean?” “It means,” Luca replied, finally turning fully toward him, “you’ve been in her life this whole time…” His voice dropped slightly— “…and she still feels alone.” That— That broke something. ⸻ Before Kael could respond— “Arielle?” Both of them turned. And there she was. Standing a few steps away. Her eyes moved between them. Confusion. Tension. Something deeper. “What’s going on?” she asked quietly. ⸻ Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. Kael straightened slightly, stepping back just enough—but his eyes never left Luca. “Ask him,” Kael said. Luca didn’t look away either. “I was just leaving,” he said calmly. Arielle frowned slightly. “That doesn’t answer my question.” “It doesn’t need to,” Kael muttered. Her gaze snapped to him. “Kael.” The way she said his name— Firm. Tired. Affected him more than he expected. “What are you doing here?” she asked. Simple question. Complicated answer. “I came to see you,” he said. Honest. For once. Arielle hesitated. Her heart reacting before her mind could catch up. But then— She remembered. His distance. His silence. The way he walked away. “You’ve seen me,” she said quietly. That distance again. Right back between them. ⸻ Luca watched the exchange. Carefully. Understanding more than they were saying. “I’ll go,” he said softly, stepping back. Arielle turned slightly. “You don’t have to—” “I know,” he said. “But you need to talk.” Her chest tightened. Because he wasn’t wrong. ⸻ As Luca walked past Kael— He stopped for just a second. Not looking at him. But speaking just low enough— “Don’t waste this one too.” Then he kept walking. ⸻ Silence fell again. But now— It was just them. Arielle and Kael. No distractions. No escape. ⸻ “Why are you doing this?” she asked softly. Kael frowned. “Doing what?” “This,” she gestured slightly. “Showing up when it’s too late.” His jaw tightened. “It’s not too late.” She shook her head. “You don’t get to decide that.” The truth in her voice— Hurt. ⸻ Kael stepped closer. Slowly. Carefully. Like he was approaching something fragile. “I don’t like him,” he said. Arielle let out a quiet breath. “That’s not a reason.” “He’s not good for you.” “And you are?” That question— Cut deep. ⸻ Silence. Again. But this time— It wasn’t avoidance. It was confrontation. ⸻ Kael looked at her. Really looked at her. And for the first time— He didn’t hide. “I don’t know how to do this,” he admitted quietly. Her breath caught. Because that— That was real. “But I’m trying,” he continued. “And every time I do…” His voice dropped slightly— “You push me away.” Arielle’s chest tightened. “Because you waited too long,” she whispered. Their eyes locked. Pain meeting pain. Truth meeting truth. And still— So much left unsaid.
