Chapter 11: The Things He Never Meant to Leave Behind

920 Words
Luca did not stop walking until the city began to blur. The noise, the lights, the restless movement of strangers brushing past him—it all became distant, meaningless. His mind was not in the present. It lingered somewhere behind him, in a hospital room he had forced himself to walk away from. Leaving had not been impulsive. It had been necessary. At least, that was what he kept telling himself. The night air was cold, but he barely felt it. His hands were buried deep in his pockets, his shoulders tense, his jaw set in a way that suggested restraint rather than calm. Every step he took carried a weight he refused to acknowledge, as though stopping even for a moment might cause everything he had been holding back to surface all at once. And he could not afford that. Not now. Not when everything was already beginning to unravel. He reached his apartment eventually, though he did not remember the walk. The building stood quiet and indifferent, its dimly lit corridors offering no comfort, no sense of belonging. It was simply a place—a temporary shelter for someone who had never truly learned how to stay. Inside, the silence greeted him immediately. It was not peaceful. It was hollow. Luca exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair as he stepped further in, the door clicking shut behind him with a finality that echoed louder than it should have. For a long moment, he stood there. Still. Unmoving. Then, without warning, his composure cracked. His hand collided with the wall, the sharp impact breaking the silence in a way that felt almost violent. The pain that followed was immediate, grounding, but it did nothing to ease the turmoil building inside him. “Damn it,” he muttered under his breath, his voice rough, strained. This was exactly what he had been trying to avoid. Feeling. Thinking. Caring more than he was supposed to. Arielle was never meant to become this important. She had not been part of the plan. And yet, somewhere along the way, she had become the one thing he could not control. That was the problem. That was always the problem. Luca moved toward the window, his gaze drifting over the city below. The lights flickered like distant stars, beautiful but unreachable, existing in a world that felt separate from his own. He had spent years building walls, perfecting the art of distance, ensuring that nothing and no one could get close enough to matter. And then she happened. Quietly. Unexpectedly. Dangerously. He closed his eyes briefly, her face appearing in his mind with unsettling clarity. The way she looked at him, as though she could see past everything he tried to hide. The way she stayed, even when he gave her every reason to walk away. It made no sense. And that was exactly why he had to leave. Because if he stayed— He would ruin her. The thought settled heavily in his chest. Not as fear. But as certainty. Luca reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. The screen lit up, casting a faint glow across his face. For a moment, he hesitated, his thumb hovering over her name. He could call. He could explain. He could tell her the truth he had been keeping buried for far too long. But what would that change? Nothing. If anything, it would only pull her deeper into something she did not deserve to be part of. His grip on the phone tightened slightly before he exhaled and lowered it. No. Distance was safer. For her. For him. For everyone involved. He moved away from the window, his steps slower now, more deliberate, as though he were forcing himself to accept a reality he had been trying to avoid. On the small table near the couch sat a folder. Dark. Unassuming. But far from insignificant. Luca stared at it for a long moment before finally reaching for it, his movements measured, controlled. Inside were documents. Photographs. Fragments of a past he had never truly escaped. And at the center of it all— A name. One that changed everything. Kael. Luca’s expression hardened almost imperceptibly as he looked down at the page, his jaw tightening. This was not a coincidence. It had never been. Their paths crossing. Arielle being caught between them. None of it was accidental. It was connected. It always had been. And now, it was too late to pretend otherwise. Luca closed the folder slowly, his mind already moving ahead, calculating, deciding. He had stayed away this long. He had tried to keep things separate. But that was no longer an option. If Kael was involved— Then everything Luca had been running from was closer than he thought. And that meant Arielle was in danger. A quiet tension settled over him, replacing the earlier chaos with something far more focused. More dangerous. He picked up his jacket without hesitation. Leaving had been necessary. But staying away? That was no longer a choice. ⸻ Back at the hospital, Arielle stood alone in the hallway, her phone still in her hand, her thoughts louder than the world around her. She did not know where Luca had gone. She did not know why he had left. But deep down— She felt it. Something was wrong. Not just between them. But beyond them. Something bigger. Something she could not yet see. And somehow— She was already in the middle of it.
