Chapter 6: Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

703 Words
The night refused to be quiet. Even the wind seemed restless, dragging against the windows like it knew something had shifted—something dangerous. Arielle stood alone in her room, her fingers still trembling from everything that had happened. From Kael’s anger. From Luca’s silence. From the way her name had sounded in both their voices— so different, yet equally heavy. She pressed her palm to her chest. “Why does it feel like I’m the problem…?” she whispered. But deep down, she knew. It wasn’t her. It was them. ⸻ Across the Hall… Kael couldn’t sit still. He paced his room like a storm trapped in human form, his jaw clenched so tight it hurt. Luca. The name alone was enough to set something dark loose inside him. Kael grabbed his jacket and stormed out. Downstairs Luca was exactly where Kael expected him to be. Calm. Still. Unbothered. Leaning against the wall like the world didn’t touch him. That alone made Kael angrier. “Do you ever move,” Kael snapped, “or do you just stand there pretending you don’t ruin things?” Luca didn’t flinch. Didn’t even look surprised. “I don’t ruin things,” he said quietly. “I just don’t lie about them.” Kael let out a bitter laugh. “Lie?” he stepped closer. “You mean like pretending you don’t want her?” That did it. For the first time— Luca looked at him. And there it was. That flicker. That truth. “I never said I didn’t.” The silence that followed? Sharp enough to cut. The Breaking Point Kael shoved him. Hard. “Stay away from her.” Luca didn’t move back. Didn’t fight. Didn’t react. Which somehow made it worse. “You don’t get to decide that,” Luca said, his voice low but steady. “I do if you’re going to hurt her.” Luca’s eyes darkened. “And what exactly do you think you’re doing, Kael?” That hit. Harder than any punch. ⸻ Upstairs… Listening Arielle hadn’t meant to listen. But when voices rise, walls don’t protect you. She stood frozen at the top of the stairs, every word hitting her like it belonged to her… because it did. “She’s not something you can win,” Luca said. “I’m not trying to win,” Kael shot back. “Then what are you doing?” Silence. A long, painful silence. And then— Kael’s voice. Raw. Unfiltered. “I’m trying not to lose her.” Arielle’s breath caught. ⸻ The Truth They Won’t Admit Luca exhaled slowly. For a second, he looked… tired. Not cold. Not distant. Just… human. “You already are,” he said quietly. Kael’s fists clenched. “Say that again.” “I said,” Luca met his eyes, “you’re losing her the moment you make this about control instead of choice.” Kael stepped forward again— But this time… He stopped. Because deep down— He knew Luca wasn’t wrong. The Moment That Changes Everything A floorboard creaked. Both of them looked up. Arielle stood there. Caught. Exposed. And suddenly— All the tension. All the words. All the unspoken feelings— Landed on her. “Good,” she said softly, her voice shaking. “Now I don’t have to pretend I didn’t hear any of that.” Neither of them spoke. For once— They didn’t have control. She did. Her Voice “I’m not something you fight over,” she said, stepping down slowly. Her eyes moved from Kael… To Luca. “And I’m definitely not something either of you gets to decide for.” Kael looked away. Luca stayed still. “I care about both of you,” she continued, her voice breaking just slightly. And there it was. The truth. Out loud. Dangerous. Irreversible. “But if you keep turning this into a war…” she swallowed, “…you’re both going to lose me.” Silence Real silence. Heavy. Final. No one had a response to that. Because nothing could fix it now. Not words. Not pride. Not even love. End Scene Arielle turned and walked away. This time— Neither of them followed.
