Chapter 12: The Name He Was Never Meant to Find

778 Words
Kael did not sleep. Even when his eyes were closed, his mind refused to rest. Something about the way Arielle had looked at her phone… the hesitation in her voice… the truth she tried not to say—it lingered. It stayed with him, pressing quietly against his thoughts until it became impossible to ignore. He had always trusted instinct over words. And right now, his instinct was loud. Too loud. The early morning light crept slowly into the hospital room, pale and indifferent, stretching across the floor until it reached the edge of his bed. The world outside was waking up, but inside him, something had already been awake all night. Watching. Thinking. Connecting pieces that no longer felt separate. Luca. The name alone felt heavier now. Not just because of Arielle. But because something about him had never sat right. Too composed. Too controlled. Too… intentional. Kael exhaled slowly and pushed himself up despite the dull pain that immediately spread through his body. His movements were careful, but there was determination behind them now. Rest could wait. Answers couldn’t. The room was quiet, giving him the space he needed to think clearly for the first time since everything had happened. His gaze drifted toward the small table beside him, where his belongings had been placed neatly by the nurse. His phone. Wallet. Keys. Normal things. But nothing about this situation felt normal anymore. He reached for his phone, unlocking it with a slight frown. There was only one place to start. He typed the name slowly. Luca. For a moment, nothing happened. Then— Results. Not many. But enough. Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly as he scrolled, his attention sharpening with every piece of information that appeared. It was fragmented, incomplete, like someone had deliberately erased parts of a story and left only what could not be hidden. That alone was enough to raise suspicion. But then— He saw it. A file. Old. Buried. Barely visible unless you were looking for something specific. Kael opened it. And everything shifted. His expression darkened, the quiet tension in his jaw tightening as he read. It wasn’t just a name. It was a connection. A history. A past that had never been fully closed. And right there— Linked to it— Was his own name. Kael. Not recent. Not accidental. But deliberate. Recorded. Documented. Watched. A cold realization settled into his chest. “This isn’t about Arielle…” he muttered under his breath. It never was. A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts, but he barely registered it as the nurse stepped in, offering a routine check, her voice soft and professional. Kael responded automatically, his attention still locked on the screen in his hand. He needed more. And he knew exactly where to get it. ⸻ Across the city, Luca was already moving. Fast. Focused. His earlier hesitation had disappeared completely, replaced by something far more dangerous—clarity. If Kael had already started looking… Then time was running out. Luca stepped into a dimly lit building, his presence immediately shifting the atmosphere around him. This was not a place for ordinary conversations. This was where truths were kept hidden… and where they were sometimes forced into the light. A man stood waiting inside. Older. Calm. Watching Luca like he already knew why he had come. “You took longer than expected,” the man said. Luca didn’t respond immediately. His gaze was sharp, controlled, but there was urgency beneath it. “He’s involved,” Luca said finally. No explanation needed. The man’s expression changed slightly. “That complicates things.” “It ends things,” Luca corrected, his voice lower now. “We don’t have the luxury of waiting anymore.” The silence that followed was heavy with understanding. Because they both knew what that meant. ⸻ Back at the hospital, Arielle returned. Her steps slowed as she reached the door, her hand hesitating on the handle. Something felt different. She couldn’t explain it. But she felt it. When she stepped inside, Kael was no longer lying down. He was sitting up. Awake. Focused. And looking at her in a way he never had before. Not just with emotion. But with knowledge. “Arielle,” he said quietly. Her heart skipped. There was something in his voice that made her uneasy. “What is it?” she asked, stepping closer. Kael held her gaze for a long moment. Then— “Who is Luca?” The question hit harder this time. Not soft. Not emotional. But sharp. Direct. Dangerous. Arielle froze. Because suddenly— She realized something terrifying. She didn’t fully know the answer either.
