CHAPTER 18 — THE CRASH
Driving back to the hotel, Mia’s hands shook on the wheel. Her father knew something. Something big. Something terrifying.
“You okay?” Lucas asked gently.
“I don’t know who to trust anymore,” she said. “My father — my own father — he’s hiding something huge.”
Before Lucas could reply, a black SUV appeared in the rearview mirror. The same one from before.
“Mia — drive,” Lucas said sharply. “Get off the main road.”
She turned onto a narrow, winding road leading up the mountain. The SUV followed, gaining fast.
“Faster, Mia!”
The vehicle rammed their rear bumper. The car swerved, drifting toward the guardrail. Mia fought for control, heart pounding in her throat.
“Brace —!”
The SUV hit them again — hard. The car spun, crashing through the rail, sliding down the steep embankment before slamming into a tree. Darkness swallowed everything.
CHAPTER 19 — RECOVERY
Mia woke up in a hospital bed, her head throbbing. Lucas sat beside her, his arm in a sling, his face pale and bruised.
“Lucas,” she whispered, trying to sit up. “You’re okay.”
“Thanks to you,” he said softly. “You kept us from hitting head-on. You saved us.”
“The car — the people —”
“Gone. They didn’t stay. Just like last time.” He took her hand. “They wanted to scare us. Or silence us. But they failed. We’re still here. And we’re still asking questions.”
Mia looked at him — really looked at him. The bruises, the bandages, the way he held her hand like she was the only thing keeping him grounded.
“You came for revenge,” she said quietly. “At first. That’s why you were here.”
“I did,” he admitted. “But somewhere along the way… everything changed. You changed everything. Mia, I don’t want justice at the cost of you. But I can’t walk away from this either.”
“Then we don’t walk away. Together.”
He leaned in, his forehead resting against hers. “Together.”
CHAPTER 20 — GOING PUBLIC
They spent two days recovering — and planning. Elena came to the hospital, bringing files, recordings, everything they’d gathered.
“It’s all here,” she said. “Carlo’s confession, the payments, the witness statements, the evidence tampering. It’s enough to bring the whole thing down.”
“But we’ll be targets,” Lucas said. “Everyone involved will come after us.”
“Which is why we do it all at once,” Mia said. “Everything. Public. Unfiltered. Before they can hurt us again.”
That night, they released everything to the press — documents, audio, photos, the full story. By morning, it was everywhere. Headlines screamed: “COVER-UP EXPOSED: ACTRESS MIA REYES CLEARED — FATHER IMPLICATED.”
Mia’s father was arrested that afternoon. So were three high-ranking officials who’d accepted bribes. The house of cards had fallen.
But as Mia watched the news, she felt no triumph — only emptiness. And a lingering, terrifying thought: they’d caught the accomplices. But the man who cut the brakes — the one Adrian saw — was still out there. And they were getting closer.
CLIFFHANGER: Lucas’s phone buzzed. A photo message. Sent just now. Of Adrian — alive, smiling, dated one week after the crash.
CHAPTER 21 — THE IMPOSSIBLE PHOTO
Lucas stared at his phone, his breath caught in his throat. The photo showed Adrian — bright-eyed, alive, grinning at the camera — with a date stamp in the corner that made no sense: one week after the crash.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered. “He was dead. We buried him.”
Mia leaned in, her heart pounding. “Unless… the body wasn’t his.”
Lucas’s hands trembled as he zoomed in. The background was a beach — the same coastal town where they’d grown up. And standing next to Adrian, partially cut off, was a figure in a dark suit. A man whose face was blurred — but whose hand bore a ring Lucas knew well.
“That’s my father’s ring,” Lucas said, his voice hollow. “The one he wore every day. He said it was a family heirloom — never took it off.”
Mia’s blood ran cold. “Your father was there. A week after the accident. Which means… Adrian didn’t die that night.”
The realization hit them both at once. The crash wasn’t just a cover-up — it was a fake death. A staged tragedy built to hide something far larger. And both their fathers were at the center of it.
