LIES WE LOVED 1 - 5
CHAPTER 1 — THE OFFER
The city lights outside Mia’s penthouse glowed like scattered diamonds, but inside, the atmosphere felt anything but bright. She set her phone down on the glass coffee table and stared at the screen, the email glowing back at her: Offer: Lead Role — The Silent Truth.
Her manager, Rico, leaned forward. “This is the one, Mia. The kind of role that defines a career. The film’s being directed by Marco Santos — he’s already won international awards. And the male lead is Lucas Rivera.”
Mia’s stomach tightened. She’d heard enough about Lucas to know he wasn’t just a pretty face. He was known for his dedication, his intensity, and his habit of making every role feel terrifyingly real. Rumor had it his on-screen romances often blurred into reality.
“I don’t know if I’m ready for something this big,” she said, though she knew the truth: the role would take her to the next level, but it would also put her under a microscope. The closer people looked, the more likely they were to see the cracks in the carefully constructed life she’d built.
“Ready?” Rico laughed. “You’ve been preparing for this since you were a kid. You’re the best young actress we have. Don’t overthink it. Just say yes.”
Later that night, alone in her apartment, she scrolled through the script. The story was about a woman who’d made a terrible mistake in her youth and had spent years trying to outrun it. Art imitating life, she thought grimly. She’d only read the first three chapters when her phone buzzed with an unknown number.
I hope you’re ready to act your way out of this one.
Mia froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She stared at the message, then at the script in her lap. Who knew? And what exactly were they threatening?
CHAPTER 2 — FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The film set was a hive of activity — crew members hauling equipment, makeup artists touching up extras, the director shouting instructions across the soundstage. Mia stood near the craft services table, coffee in hand, trying to quiet the nervous flutter in her chest.
Then she saw him. Lucas walked in, dressed casually in jeans and a black t-shirt, but he commanded the room without seeming to try. Heads turned as he passed. He spotted Mia and changed course, walking straight toward her.
“Mia,” he said, extending a hand. “I’ve seen your work. You’re very talented.”
“Thank you,” she said, shaking his hand. His grip was firm, his gaze steady. “I’ve seen yours too. You’re… intense.”
He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Intensity is part of the job, don’t you think? Especially in a story like this one.”
That afternoon, they filmed their first scene together — a tense confrontation between two former lovers who’d parted on bad terms. The script called for shouting, accusation, and raw emotion. Mia threw herself into the role, but halfway through, she felt Lucas studying her too closely, his eyes searching hers as if looking for something beneath the performance.
“Cut!” the director called. “That was great — but Mia, I need you to dig deeper. I need to feel the pain behind the anger. You’re holding back.”
Mia nodded, swallowing her frustration. She was holding back — she’d been holding back for years. She felt Lucas’s gaze on her as she walked away to get a drink of water.
Later, as she was leaving the set, she saw him standing by the trailers, talking to Elena Cruz — the journalist whose byline had become synonymous with digging up the truth behind the city’s elite. Lucas glanced over and caught her watching. He said something quickly to Elena, turned, and walked away.
Why would Lucas be talking to someone who’s made a career out of exposing secrets? Mia wondered. And what were they talking about?
CHAPTER 3 — THE MESSAGE
The anonymous messages didn’t stop.
The next day, it was a photo — old, grainy, taken at night. A car, a stretch of empty road, flashing lights. No caption needed. Just the image, sent at exactly 11:47 PM — the time it had happened.
Mia deleted it immediately, her hands trembling. She told herself it was a sick joke, a coincidence, someone playing a cruel prank. But deep down, she knew. Someone knew. Someone was watching.
She tried to focus on filming, but every scene felt heavier. Every time Lucas looked at her, she wondered — was it him? Did he send them? Or was he just observant, reading the guilt she couldn’t quite hide?
“You seem distracted today,” Lucas said during a break, handing her a bottle of water. “Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine,” she said too quickly, avoiding his eyes. “Just… thinking about the scene.”
He studied her for a moment longer than was comfortable. “If you need to talk — about anything — I’m here.”
There was something in his voice — not sympathy, exactly. Recognition? As if he knew what it felt like to carry something heavy. But before she could ask, he was called back to set.
That night, another message arrived.
He’s watching. Everyone is.
Mia locked her doors, checked the windows, and sat in the dark, staring at the ceiling. The past wasn’t just haunting her — it was hunting her. And she had no idea who was holding the leash.
CHAPTER 4 — THE HOMETOWN
Two weeks into filming, the production moved to a small coastal town north of the city — the same town where Mia had grown up. Seeing the familiar streets, the weathered sign at the town entrance, the old high school building on the hill — it all brought back memories she’d spent years trying to suppress.
She stayed in a small hotel on the edge of town, away from the crew. She needed space, she told herself, but the truth was she was afraid of running into someone she’d rather forget. Every face in the crowd looked familiar; every car that slowed down made her heart race.
One afternoon, she took a walk along the beach — the same stretch of sand where she’d spent her teenage years. The tide was low, the water calm and gray. She breathed in the salt air, trying to ground herself. She was here for work. She was safe. She was successful. None of that other stuff mattered anymore.
“Mia?”
The voice came from behind her, soft and uncertain. She froze, her breath catching in her throat. She knew that voice. She’d heard it in her nightmares for twelve years.
Slowly, she turned around. Standing there was a woman she’d gone to high school with — Liza. But Liza looked different. Tired. Worn. And her eyes held a fear that made Mia’s skin crawl.
“I heard you were back,” Liza said, her voice trembling. “I tried to stay away. But I needed to warn you — they’re asking questions. About that night. Someone’s digging.”
Before Mia could ask who, Liza glanced over her shoulder, panicked. “I have to go. Just… be careful. The past doesn’t stay buried here. Not when people keep digging it up.”
She hurried away before Mia could stop her, leaving Mia standing alone on the shore, the wind suddenly feeling colder.
CHAPTER 5 — THE ENCOUNTER
Her fear was realized on her third evening in town. She’d just finished dinner in the hotel restaurant when a man walked in — tall, broad-shouldered, his hair a little shorter than she remembered, but otherwise unchanged.
Carlo.
He spotted her immediately and walked over to her table. “Mia. I heard you were back in town. I didn’t think you’d ever return.”
“I’m only here for work,” she said, keeping her voice steady. “I’ll be gone in a few weeks.”
“Running away again?” He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down without being invited. “You can’t run forever, you know. Sooner or later, the past catches up to everyone.”
“I have no idea what you mean.”
Carlo laughed, a bitter sound. “Pretend all you want. But you and I both know what really happened the night of the accident. You got away with it — you got the career, the money, the fame. But the truth is still there, buried beneath all the lies.” He slid a thick manila folder across the table toward her. “Take a look. Remind yourself of what you’re trying so hard to forget.”
He stood up to leave, then paused, leaning in close. “And be careful who you trust. The man you’re working with — Lucas Rivera. He’s not here just to make a movie. He’s here for answers. And you’re the one who has them.”
Carlo walked out, leaving Mia staring at the folder. Her hands shook as she reached for it. Whatever was inside, she knew it would change everything.
