I built the core AI system that turned Apex Innovations into a company worth watching. Julian was the CEO, the public founder, and my fiancé. I stayed in the lab while he stood onstage, so few people outside the company ever heard my name. I had accepted that arrangement for fifteen years. We had known each other since we were teenagers, and I believed every quiet night in the lab belonged to a future we would eventually share in public. Then I heard him offer my Chief Architect title to Mia, his assistant of three months. Julian planned to put her name on my system at the launch that night. He had the stage and the press list. I still had the final drive, the commercial license, and every line of access.

Chapter 1 The Hidden Architect
The final build finished. I checked the log twice, watched the validation bar complete, and saved it. When I removed the drive, three years of work fit inside my palm. I had expected the moment to feel larger. I headed for Julian’s office. Music from the pre-launch party carried up from downstairs, along with the sound of glasses being set out. He had promised we would celebrate together before the investors arrived. For once, I had believed he would keep the time clear. His oak door stood open by an inch. I lifted my hand to knock, then heard Mia speaking inside. The drive was still warm from my terminal. “But Julian, I’ve only been here for three months. Chief Architect is a lot. I don’t have the qualifications.” At least that part was true. Julian laughed, relaxed and affectionate. I had trusted that sound since we were teenagers, back when we shared one old laptop and argued over whose name would go first on the company door. “Don’t worry about it. The investors need a face for the project, and yours is perfect. Chloe’s brilliant, but she doesn’t have the face for a public role. Too severe.” My hand tightened around the drive. “Isn’t it her work?” Mia asked. “It’s our work. She’s going to be my wife soon. Think of it as her contribution to our future. It’s her duty to support me, to support us. She understands.” I stared at the narrow strip of carpet visible through the door. For fifteen years, I had taken the late shifts, fixed failed demos before dawn, and accepted that Julian would speak for both of us. Now he was assigning my name to someone else and calling it my duty. I left before either of them opened the door. The lab was empty when I returned; everyone else had gone downstairs for the party. I locked my office, sat at the same terminal where I had completed the build, and inserted the drive again. The root directory opened across my monitors. Buried inside it was the failsafe I had written before Apex received its first commercial client, when Julian still agreed that no one should be able to sell my work without my authorization. I entered three commands. `REVOKE_COMMERCIAL_LICENSE_APEX.ALL` `TERMINATE_USER_ACCESS.JULIAN.THORNE` `TERMINATE_USER_ACCESS.MIA.STERLING` A prompt appeared. `ARE YOU SURE? THIS ACTION IS IRREVERSIBLE.` I pressed Enter. I packed the few personal things in my office into a small box. On the desk lay a blank metal plaque Julian had given me when I was sixteen. He had promised to engrave both our names on it when we became co-founders and said we would hang it outside our first office. It was still blank. I dropped it into the trash. Downstairs, the guests were applauding something Julian had said. I crossed the lobby with my box against my hip. Everyone was watching the party through the glass doors, and no one looked up when I left the building. Julian texted the next morning. “Morning, honey. Stop sulking. Get back to the office and hand the final data to Mia. She’s presenting a demo to the board today. Also, pick up my gray tie from the dry cleaners. We need to look perfect for tonight.” I read the message twice. He had asked about his tie before asking where I was, and he still expected me to deliver the work to Mia after telling me to stop sulking. I opened his contact page and scrolled past fifteen years of photographs. Block.
