مر بعدها أسبوع و كان كل مرة هنري يتغير على ميندي فهو أصبح يهملها جدا . . . . أصبح يرى أنها مثل بقية النساء شكائة و بكائة ، أصبح ينزعج منها و من تواجدها قربه . . . . كان هذا يؤلمها جدا فهو في الليل بين أحضانها و في النهار كأنها لا تعرفه ، أصبحت تكره نفسها لأنها تستسلم له كل مرة . . . . يطلبها للرغبة فقط و هذا كان يشعرها بالق*ف من نفسها ، لم تعد تحترم نفسها حتى أنها خسرت أسرتها . . . . تبكي كل يوم ، بدت شاحبة جدا و كأنها بلا روح . . . . التقى بها بيتر ذات مرة لم يتعرف عليها من نحافتها ، أصبحت تطارد هنري في كل مكان لأنها سمعت بأنه يركض وراء فريسة جديدة . . . . إذن ما قاله لها بيتر صحيح ، هو لم و لم يحبها ، هو عَبد لغرباته ، و ليس لأحد . . . ظنت أنها ستغيره و أن حبها يكفيهم هم الإثنين و لكن كانت مخطئة . . . . . فهي وقعت بين يدي شيطان لا يعرف للرحمة شئ و لكن في آخر مرة أشتد الحديث ما بينهما فقال لها هنري في لحظة من الغضب و الحوجة للتخلص منها أنها مجرد نزوة كغيرها من الفتيات . . . لا ينكر أنه قضى معها وقت جميل لكن هذا لا يستمر للأبد ، و لا يريد رؤيتها مرة أخرى ثم ذهب و تركها . . . حينها شعرت ميندي بالصاعقة التي ض*بها بها هنري الآن ، هو لا يراها سوى فتاة رخيصة قضى الليالي في أحضانها ثم رماها كالكلب . . . أكثر ما ألمها أنه أخبرها أنه لم يجبرها على شئ بل فعلت هذا بوعي تام و بإرادة كاملة . . . . الحزن الذي اجتاح قلبها لم يكن قليل فهي ليست قوية لتتحمل كل ذلك ، حتى أن أهلها قد تركتهم . . . . كانت تمشي تائهة حزينة و م**ورة و عندما جائت بمكان قريب من والديها ، نظرت لهم من بعيد . . . عندما شعر بها والدها رمقها بنظرة لم تتحملها ، يمكنها أن تتحمل كل شئ ، هجر هنري لها ، حديث الناس عنها . . . . فالكل يتحدث عن هجر هنري الب*ع لها ، لكن لن تتحمل تلك النظرة التي في عين والدها ، نظرة العار التي رمقها بها . . . . نظرة تقول خيبت املي فيك ، لم تتحمل هذا و جلست في وسط الحديقة تبكي بكل قوتها ، الناس دخلو إلى منازلهم بسبب المطر . . . . لكن هي ظلت تبكي تحت المطر فأين ستذهب ، حتى النقود التي رماها لها هنري بكل تقزز لم تأخذها . . . . فهي أهنت كرامتها كثيرا و لن تفعل هذا أكثر و تأخذ نقوده التي يظن أنها ستعوضها عن العار و الألم الذي سببه لها و حتى إن وجدت مكان ، لن تستطيع العيش أو التنفس ، فقد خيبت ظن أبيها فيها ، لذا أخرجت تلك الزجاجة من الجيب الصغير في فستانها و شربتها دفعة واحد ، لم تعد تريد الحياة بعد نظرة أبيها . . . . فليذهب هنري للجحيم و لكن والدها لا تتحمل ألا يحبها و يحترمها مثل الأول . . . . وقعت على الأرض و هي تلفظ أنفاسها الأخيرة و كان بيتر مارا لحظتها يركض نحو الشجر ليختبئ من المطر ، فهو كان يبحث عن ميندي . . . . يريد أن يصالحها على والديها ، فهي لم تعد تملك شئ الآن و هذا بسبب صديقه و هو يشعر بالذنب لانه من أخبره عن هويتها . . . . لكن صُعق لمنظرها و هي واقعة على الأرض فركض نحوها ، و حاول أن يحملها لكن هي أمسكت يده . . . ثم قالت لافظة آخر نفس للحياة " اخبر أبي أنني أحبه و أن يسامحني . . . . ثم ماتت بين يدي بيتر الذي أصابه الخدر في جسده و الصدمة من هذه الميتة بين يديه . . .

و في جنازة ميندي أمسك بيتر يد روبرت و قال و دموعه بعينيه " أخبرتني أنها تحبك كثيرا و طلبت أن تسامحها لذا أرجوك سامحها . . . . . نظرة له روبرت بأعين م**ورة و مقهورة و ظهر محني يدل على الألم الذي يواجهه الآن و قال " ان لم أغضب منها لأسامحها ، هي كانت أحب شئ لدي و الآن ذهبت

. . . ثم مشى حزينا م**ور الخاطر على إبنته و لكن قبل أن يذهب أمسكت والدتها يد هنري و هي تبتسم بألم و قالت " عدالة السماء موجودة و صدقني قلبك هذا سستحطم إلى أشلاء و ستموت وحيدا ليس معك أحد . . . . ثم ذهبت و تركته يكافح في دموعه التي سقطت لوحدها . . . هو لم يقصد أن يؤذيها ، لم يقصد أن يجعلها تموت ، هو لم يقصد هذا كله . . . .
