The board of directors all waited in the conference room in anticipation as they waited for Liam Stevenson after he had announced an emergency meeting.
“How dare that little boy summon all of us like we have nothing to do?” Mathew, Liam’s uncle, thundered as he frowned his face.
Then the conference door opened and Liam stepped in, looking all nice and authoritative in his black suit.
“Finally! We thought we would be waiting till eternity” Mathew grumbled.
Liam turned to his Uncle with a fake smile “Well, shall I say the wait is over now?”
Mathew just rolled his eyes and Liam continued. “As we all know,it has been twenty years since my father died and in his will,he stated that I take on the position of the President only when I marry Sabrina Covington and until then,my Uncle remains the President”
“Of course we all know” Nathan,Mathew’s son interrupted him “But are you now married to her? We all saw the news about what happened to her, didn't we?” He asked and everyone mummered in agreement, then his voice dropped to a whisper “We heard that she might even be dead”
Liam scoffed “Dead? Who says she is dead when she just had a minor accident”
"So where is she?" One of the female directors asked.
“Well she has fully recovered, thanks to my idea of keeping her condition private and we got married just this Saturday” the corner of his lips curled into a half smile as he watched the confusion on everyone's face “It's unfortunate you all couldn't make it though”.
“Married?” Mathew burst into laughter as he clapped in his hands together. “How can you be married to a woman that was severely injured just a few days ago? How does that make any sense”
“You sound like you saw how badly she was hurt my dear Uncle” Liam countered and Mathew swallowed hard.
"Today,I,Liam Stevenson, am glad to bring my lawfully wedded wife, Sabrina Stevenson before everyone of you today,as the wife of the new President of Stevenson Groups!"
Liam’s assistant opened the room door for Kylie, now Sabrina and she walked in graciously, making everyone surprised by how healthy she looked. Even Matthew was surprised to see that she doesn't look like someone that was severely injured. To them, she was looking confident, but deep down,Kylie was shaking in her boots. She hated how their eyes were on her,but does she have a choice?
"How can we be sure that this is exactly Sabrina?" He asked as he stood up from his seat in shock.
"As far as I know, Sabrina doesn't have a twin sister,so who else would it be if not her? Or you want me to show you her scar, doubting Thomas?" Liam asked him,his hatred for him was evident in his voice.
Sabrina quickly cleared her throat, seeing the silence as her cue to speak "I'm glad to be before all of you today, though it was almost impossible. According to my husband's late father’s will,I'm glad he will finally be taking over the Company and…." Sabrina said.
"So what? You think your husband knows anything about how we do things here?” He cut her off rudely then faced Liam “Do you even have the confidence to take on the CEO role?"
"I hope you know I didn't spend years of my life doing nothing,Uncle. I was studying so that when I finally became the CEO,the company wouldn't suffer for my incompetency." He looked at Mathew in the eyes "I hope the directors would be eager to work alongside with me"
The Directors cleared their throats as they all shifted uncomfortably in their seats. They were all for Mathew but this time there was nothing they could also do
“Well,we guess so,” one of them said while others nodded in agreement.
Mathew's jaw dropped as he looked at the directors, his face filled with disbelief. "You guess so?" he repeated, his voice dangerously low as he stared them down one by one. "After twenty years of building this company, of pouring my life into it, you're just going to toss me aside over a piece of paper?" He slammed his hands on the table, making everyone jump. "How dare you? All of you! I made you who you are!"
Nathan, his son, quickly stood up and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Dad, calm down.”
In a flash of pure rage, Mathew slapped his son's hand away, the sound echoing in the silent room. "Don't you dare tell me to calm down! You, of all people!" he bellowed. The directors all stared at their hands, refusing to meet his enraged gaze.
"Who said anyone was tossing you aside, Uncle?" Liam's voice was calm and steady, cutting through the tense atmosphere. "You can still be the Vice President."
Mathew scoffed, a humorless sound. "Vice President? You honestly think someone like me would settle for that lowly position and work under you?" He jabbed a finger in Liam's direction. "I've done my best for this company over the last two decades. I won't lose it all to a rich bastard who did nothing!"
"I'd advise you to watch your mouth, Uncle," Liam warned, his voice hardening. "Unless you want to be removed from the premises."
Kylie, now Sabrina, shifted uncomfortably behind Liam, wishing she could just disappear. She felt completely out of place, a pawn in a power struggle she had nothing to do with. The drama in the room was just so suffocating for her.
With a furious cry, Mathew picked up his water bottle and hurled it at the glass wall of the conference room. He then stormed toward Liam, stopping just inches from his face. He leaned in close and whispered, "Watch your back, you filthy bastard.I refuse to go down like this. I will never stop until I make sure to chase you out of this Company with nothing to your name" With that final threat, he turned and stormed out of the room.
Liam watched his uncle's retreating form, a slow smile spreading across his face. He then turned to the directors. "Well, gentlemen," he said, his voice cheerful, "I believe that concludes our meeting. I'll be seeing you all tomorrow morning for my first day as President."
The directors, still shaken, quickly gathered their belongings and made their way out of the conference room. Nathan was the last to leave. He paused at the doorway, his eyes narrowed with rage. "You won't get away with this, Liam," he hissed. "You won't humiliate our family and walk away. I promise you that." With that final threat, he stormed out too.
Finally, only Liam and Sabrina remained in the room, the silence heavy with tension. Sabrina swallowed hard, her heart pounding. "Did... did I do well?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Liam inhaled sharply, the easy smile from moments before gone completely. "Did you do well?" he sneered, his gaze cold. "This isn't a f*****g World Cup, so don't ask me a dumb question like that. You have no idea what goes on in a place like this and that makes you sound stupid"
He didn't wait for her to respond, but instead turned on his heel and walked out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him. The sound echoed through the silent space, leaving Sabrina standing
alone, feeling stupid and utterly foolish.
