PCs For Your D's

1680 Words
I gave Cat one of my spare backpacks and promised to get her one after school since I only have backpacks that are twice the size of her petite body. She let me brush out her curls and pull them back in two pigtails. She is a beautiful little girl. Once we had breakfast, I took her to school. I told her if she went to class and brought back good grades at the end of her term, I would give her fifty dollars. And she'd be free to spend them on whatever she wanted. She was really happy about that.      The store I work for isn't too far from the school, which is great because I can pick her up after my shift. She's in second grade and has been kicked out of two other schools. She's in for a hell of a ride if she keeps it up. I know it took a while for me to settle down. I really hope she listens to me. I wish I had been sent to cyrilla sooner. Maybe things might have been different for me.     I walked into the store going towards the back to get my vest on and clock in. Amanda, my boss, is sitting up front, her hands are clicking away at the laptop in front of her. She sent a nod my way in greeting without looking at me as I grabbed the basket filled with things that are out of place. I had started putting items back in their designated places when someone walked in the front door making the little bell over the door ring.     "Welcome to PCs for Your Ds," Amanda called out from the register.     I smiled to myself. That's the name of this store. PCs for your Desks or Ds as everyone else calls it. She didn't get a verbal response. From where I'm standing, I can see the top of a beanie as she walked down the aisle where all the cooling fans are.      She is still standing there by the time I finished putting all the things away. I put the basket behind the counter and went around to see if the customer needs any help. I stopped recognizing her from last night when I was dropped off at Cyrilla's. The girl in leather.      "Are you stalking me?" I asked. She smirked looking over at me.      "You remember me?" she asked in her thick accent.      "Yeah, hard not to. Do you need help with something?"      "Yeah, I can't find this," she said handing me a piece of paper. I opened it to find it has some symbols on it. I recognized them right away but they have nothing to do with fans or anything PC related.      "Is this some kind of joke?" I asked offering the paper back to her. She ignored it.     "Do you know what that is?" she asked.      "Yeah, I do. The top one is from the King Arthur legend. It's the Pendragon crest. The other one is from the Red Amarylis legend of the evil queen that tried to destroy Camelot,"      "Not many know of the evil queen. How did you come across that story?" she asked.     "I lived with a woman who was a historian once. What do you want? Why are you following me?"      "My name is Lucille Lancelot," she smiled.      "That's your name? Lucille Lancelot?" I asked emphasizing her last name.      "I believe that's what I just said," she smirked.      "Okay, Lucille Lancelot. What the hell do you want with me?"      "Have you met the woman with the red hair?"      "I know a lot of women with red hair," I shrugged.      "No, this one has a unique red. It looks like blood. You'll see it when you meet her," she removed the slouchy on her head to reveal her short golden hair. It's literally the color of gold. It matches the set of necklaces around her neck to the point. I've never seen anyone with hair like this.     "How did you get this color?" I asked reaching for it. She moved away. I pulled back feeling like an i***t. I never touch people mostly because I prefer the same courtesy.     "It's natural. Like yours,"      "How do you know my hair is natural?"      "You can't get silver like this from a box," she smirked flicking the end of my braid. "I promise I'm not doing it on purpose but we're going to be running into one another a lot. A few others as well. The girl at the shop yesterday. That's Gabrielle Galahad,"     "What the f**k? What are you guys? Knights of the round table superfans? What do you want with me?"      "You don't know this yet, love. But you and I are going to be the best of friends. I've been waiting for you," she smiled, taking the most expensive fan we have off the shelf. She motioned me to follow her to the front so she could pay for it.      "Good job," Amanda beamed from where she sat. "That was a hell of a sale,"      "Thanks," I answered mindlessly watching the girl walk away.     I looked down at the paper the girl had left with the two crests printed on them. Now there's a phone number on it. Maybe I just didn't catch it before. I put it in my pocket and started walking around the store collecting stray items and putting them back in place just to look busy.     At the end of the day, I looked up at the clock to see it was two fifteen. Cat should be coming out of school in twenty minutes. I clocked out and put my vest back in place. Amanda gave me a few tablets and new screens so I can fix them and bring them in tomorrow. I walked over to the front to see a girl standing in front of a really expensive-looking car. It's foreign and exotic, just like her.     She glanced up and for an instant, our eyes met. I couldn't bring myself to look away and it made her smile. She was the one that broke out gaze. Her hair is the most beautiful shade of black I had ever seen. My skin raised with goosebumps. The smirk on her face made me laugh as I walked down the street towards the elementary school. I rubbed my arms trying to shake the feeling that lingered over my skin.      The streets are jam-packed with cars waiting for their kids to come out from inside of the school. The girl had followed me. Not closely but I can feel her eyes on me. It's weird. I had never felt anything like this before. It literally feels like something brushing against the back of my head. I turned around not being able to contain myself only to see she's just a few feet away.      "Do I know you?" I asked.       "Not yet," thick British accent just like Lucille Lancelot.     "Let me guess. You're a knight too?"       The grin lit up her features, making them sharper and more inviting. I have never considered a woman to be this attractive before now. Sure, pretty, but damn this girl just makes me want to go home and wear something expensive and pretty to make me feel better about myself. Starting with her got damn hair. Big grey seemingly purple-ish eyes. Expensively tailored clothes. She's definitely not any older than I am.     "I can be but no. I'm not a knight,"      "Why are you following me?"      "Meer," someone shouted behind me.      "Paranoid. My word, you really are her," she laughed reaching for the little girl about Cat's age.     "Excuse me?" she didn't say anything else. She picked up the little girl who is a spitting image of her up into her arms and began to walk away.      "Lily, you came to pick me up?" I looked back to see Cat standing behind me.      "Yeah, I said I would. Didn't I?" I nodded trying to clear my head. I took her backpack off her shoulders and held it in one hand. She let me take her hand with my other.      "What did you do today?" she asked when I led her to the Chinese food shop so we can get something to eat.      "Work. How was school?"  She shrugged without saying another word. She pointed at what she wanted when the man asked her what she wanted.     We sat in front of the massive window. Cat looked down at her bowl and started to pick at the broccoli in it before she slowly started to eat. I wanted to ask her why she was so skeptical about eating but decided against it. I looked away towards the street to see the girl from the shop yesterday walking towards a set of bikes.      The girl from earlier said her name is Gabrielle. I hadn't noticed yesterday because I was so caught up with Cat, but she has some similarities to other girls. Her hair is an intense bronze color. A darker shade of gold, almost brown. Her eyes are a nice apple green. She grabbed a red helmet off the red bike before looking back. Lucille walked up behind her, taking a dark red helmet from the black street fighter I had seen her on yesterday. The two of them looked over at me at the same time.      A tingling sensation flooded through my senses. My ears began to ring and my head swooned a little. I looked down at my food, stretching my arms, trying to shake the feeling and stop my head from swimming. It took a couple of minutes but the feeling faded just as fast as it came. I looked over to where the two girls were to find they were gone.      "Are you okay?" I jumped startled with the sound of Cat's voice.      "Yeah, just got dizzy for a sec," I gaze up at her a little disoriented.     "You should eat," she suggested pointing at my food before she started eating again.  What the hell is happening? Who are these girls?
