Chapter 3: Stolen Fates
Ava – POV…
The door burst open with a bang, slamming against the wall. I jumped up from the floor, my heart nearly choking me as my stepmother stormed in, Clara right behind her, eyes gleaming like she had seen something she never liked.
Before I could make sense of anything, her hand grabbed my arm in a vice grip, nails digging into my skin. “You filthy little wretch,” she spat. “What did you do?!”
I stared at her for a moment not even understanding what she was trying to say.
“I-I didn’t—”
“Don’t lie to me!” she snapped, her face twisted in fury. “Where did you get that power, huh? You think you can hide that from me?! How can a wolf-less girl like you be blessed with healing powers? not even the strongest warrior in the pack have such powers”
My mouth went dry. My stomach twisted in dread.
Clara stepped forward, smug and superior. “I saw you,” she said like she was proud. “Last night. I followed you. Saw how you snuck into the Alpha’s room. I saw everything—I saw how you healed him.”
I sank to my knees, my legs giving out. “Please,” I whispered, looking up at them. “Please don’t tell anyone. I didn’t mean any harm. I just… I had to save him. He’s my mate and I had no choice.”
The word slipped from my mouth before I could stop it. They stared at me for a second—then they laughed. Cold, cruel laughter that echoed in my bones.
“Your mate?” Clara snorted. “You? That’s hilarious.”
“You were born wolf-less,” my stepmother said through gritted teeth. “You are nothing. Not a healer. Not a Luna. And definitely not the Alpha’s mate. You good For nothing girl, trying to claim glory.”
“It’s true,” I said softly. “When I touched him… I felt it. I felt the bond, everything, I'm not lying.”
She crouched down to my level and grabbed my face with both hands, forcing me to look into her eyes. “Then you’ll feel this too,” she whispered, then shoved me back so hard I hit the ground with a painful thud.
“Why are you doing this?” I cried out. “Why do you hate me so much? What have I ever done to you that you pour out all your anger and hatred towards me?”
She stood and glared down at me like I was filth under her shoe. “Because you’re a reminder of everything I never wanted. I married your father for status, not to raise his mistake. I have my own daughter to raise but not good for nothing bad luck like you.”
Tears burned in my eyes. I bit my lip to keep from screaming. It wouldn’t help. Nothing ever did.
“She’s up to something mom,” Clara said, stepping forward. “The Alpha. He’s asking for the one who healed him. Sndbyou know what that means?”
I gasped just hearing that. “He remembers?”
“Yes,” my stepmother said slowly. “And he’s calling for you. But guess what, sweetheart?”
She leaned in close. “You’ll never reach him. Not while I'm still alive.”
Before I could react, she pulled me up by my shirt and dragged me out of the room. “No! Please!” I begged, kicking, trying to dig my heels into the floor. “You can’t do this! I saved him!”
“Exactly,” Clara muttered. “And now I’m going to take credit for it.”
My blood ran cold.
“No! No, please, don’t—”
My stepmother shoved open the basement door. “This is your place, Ava. Dark, hidden, and forgotten.”
She shoved me down the stairs. I hit the stone floor hard, pain shooting through my arms and knees. The door slammed behind me and locked with a heavy clunk.
I ran to it, pounding with both fists. “Let me out! Please! You can’t do this to me!”
No answer.
Just silence.
Just darkness.
…
Kyran – POV
I stood outside the pack house, eyes locked on the trees in the distance. I could still remember the feel of her hands. The warmth in them. The power.
The girl who saved me. My Mate. the one I have been longing for so long.
My wolf was restless. Pacing. Snarling. Agitated deep within.
She was close. I could feel it.
Her scent was still fresh in my nose as If i was smelling her every second.
“She’s here,” my Beta Lucas said as he approached.
I turned sharply. “Are you sure?”
He nodded.
I walked out quickly, pushing past the curious eyes that watched me from the gathering crowd. My eyes locked on her. She was standing in a white dress, face powdered and neat, trying to look graceful.
She looks more different than the Image I was able to capture.
But something was wrong. Very wrong. But yet I could not tell at this point.
She bowed her head as she moved towards me. “Alpha Kyran,” she said sweetly. “I heard you were looking for me.”
Her voice was different from the one I had heard last night, the tone was a bit off in some way.
I stepped forward slowly, every part of me on alert. The scent… it was faintly right. Familiar. But off.
“You healed me?” I asked.
She nodded, her voice soft. “Yes. I couldn’t just watch you suffer Alpha. I will do whatever it takes to save you.”
I reached out, letting my hand rest lightly on her cheek. The spark was weak. Barely there.
“You’re my mate,” she whispered, stepping into my arms.
My wolf growled in my head. It was unsure. Angry.
For a second it was like the bond was a bit confused but yet it was the same smell from.last night.
I didn’t pull away. I let her rest her head against my chest for a while. So I can be sure if this isn't a mistake.
But all I could think about was how it didn’t feel the same.
And why the bond felt like it was slipping through my fingers.
