Chapter Four: The Betrayal
Ava – POV…
I didn’t know how long I’d been pounding on the basement door. My fists throbbed and my voice was raw from screaming. My body ached. My throat was dry. But I refused to stop.
Then, suddenly, the door creaked open.
Light spilled into the darkness, and I stumbled back, blinking hard as my eyes adjusted. My legs wobbled beneath me, but I pushed forward and slipped out, heart hammering.
It was already dusk. The sky had turned a deep, bruised purple, and the air held the heavy stillness of nightfall. I had to get to Alpha Kyran. Now.
I ran. Ran as fast as my keg could carry me.
Branches clawed at my arms and face, and the cold air bit into my skin. I ignored the sting. My bare feet slammed against the packed dirt as I sprinted, lungs burning. When the Alpha’s estate came into view, I skidded to a stop.
My heart was already out of the running.
He was already outside.
Alpha Kyran stood in the courtyard, a tall figure of dominance and command. And right beside him—was Clara.
That wicked b***h.
The way he held her smile at her and pull her close as if she was his world
My heart dropped.
She was wrapped in a soft gown, her hair curled to perfection. Her hands rested gently in his, and he looked down at her with a flicker of recognition.
“No,” I whispered.
Before I could move, someone yanked me back by the arm. I gasped, spinning to find my stepmother standing behind me, her face twisted with anger.
“How did you get out?” she hissed, her nails digging into my skin. “How were you able to open the door?”
I tried to pull myself away from her grip.
“I… I don’t know,” I stammered.
“You should’ve stayed down there. You will ruin everything.” Her tone dropped, venom lacing every word. “Do you really think the Alpha would want a filthy, wolfless girl like you? How dear do you think coming here will change anything?”
“He’s my mate,” I whispered. “The bond—he felt it too. Why are you trying to let Clara take that away from me.p”
She slapped me.
“You dare speak of a bond you don’t deserve? How dear you even call him your Mate, you will always be wolfless.”
I winced, my cheek stinging. But I held her gaze.
The Alpha turned then, his voice loud enough to silence the murmurs. “What’s going on over there?”
My stepmother smiled sweetly, her demeanor changing in an instant. “Oh, nothing, Alpha. Just my maid coming to retrieve something she forgot.”
“No!” I broke free from her grip, stepping forward. “She’s lying!”
Kyran’s eyes snapped to me.
“I’m the one who healed you,” I said, walking slowly toward him. “It was me. Don’t you remember? The fever, the pain—I came to your room that night. I took away the pain and healed you.”
His expression was unreadable.
“I felt it,” I whispered. “The bond. When you touched me… when you held my hand, you said—”
“I see a weak omega,” he interrupted, his voice cold. “Standing in front of me. How dare you set foot on my grounds? And how dear you even claimed lies before me.”
Pain stabbed through my chest.
“I saved your life,” I said, my voice shaking. “I was the one—”
Clara stepped forward, her laughter high-pitched and cruel. “You? You think you healed him? A low ranking without powers like you.”
She turned to Kyran. “She’s delusional. She must’ve followed me and saw me go to your room. That’s why she’s making up this ridiculous story. Don't believe her Alpha, she isn't just a low powerless wolf but also a liar."
“You’re lying!” I shouted, eyes burning. “Tell him the truth, Clara! Tell him I'm the one he's looking for.”
Clara leaned in, her voice low and smug. “You should’ve stayed in that basement.”
Kyran’s beta, Lucas, approached, a hard glare in his eyes.
“Alpha?” he asked.
“Chain her,” Kyran ordered, his voice like steel. “Drag her through the village. Let every one see what happens to liars and traitors. Then take her to the outer woods and leave her. If she survives, fine. If she doesn’t… Well, that’s nature.”
“No!” I screamed. “Please—just listen to me! I'm not lying, I'm the one who healed you.”
My stepmother smirked, and Clara crossed her arms with satisfaction. Kyran’s eyes didn’t even flicker.
Lucas grabbed me roughly, silver chains already in hand. They burned against my skin the moment they touched me. I bit down a cry, refusing to give them the satisfaction of seeing me weak.
I was dragged through the pack grounds, dirt scraping my knees, rocks cutting into my palms. Wolves stared as I passed—some with confusion, others with disgust. No one moved to help me. No one cared to know what was happening.
No one questioned the Alpha’s word.
“Keep going,” Lucas muttered, his grip tight.
We reached the woods. The trees stood tall and silent, like judges about to sentence me. My arms trembled as Lucas tied me to a horse, ropes digging into my wrists.
I try to push away to free myself from.him, but he was the beta and I'm the girl without a wolf.
“Alpha’s orders,” he said. “Survive if you can.”
Then he slapped the horse’s side, and the world lurched.
Pain exploded through me as I was dragged over dirt, stone, and roots. My screams echoed through the trees, but there was no one to hear them. My dress tore, skin burned raw from the ground. Every bump sent a fresh wave of agony.
I don’t know how long it lasted.
Eventually, the horse slowed, then stopped. My body flopped against the grass, bleeding and bruised. The world blurred around me.
I couldn’t move.
My eyes fluttered shut. I thought it was the end.
But then—footsteps.
Heavy ones. Confident. Approaching.
And then everything faded to black.
