The Dinner

Once I was done with changing my clothes, to a black dress that hugs every curve of my body, and a black jersey that is open in the front, and black heels. I blow dried my hair straight and I walk out of my apartment towards the car. Connor was sitting in the car waiting for me, I feel nervous. I get into the car and I look ahead, waiting for us to drive. I can see out the corner of my eye that Connor is looking at me, then he clears his throat as he looks ahead of him, he squirms in his seat and starts the car. We drove in silence. We arrive at the restaurant, I get out of the car, and I follow Connor inside the Italian restaurant called Emilio's Ballato. Walking through the doors of Emilio's Ballato is like stepping into a time machine. Its like I'm instantly transported to mid-century New York, where vintage photographs and album covers line the walls and chandeliers hang from the ceiling. A waiter leads us to our table.  We take a seat, "The regular sir?" The waiter asks.  "Yes please" Connor says. "The food here is amazing, what do you usually order or eat? Besides the hotdog you had" he looks at me raising an eyebrow still a serious expression on his face. "Well I do salads mostly" I say shyly biting my lip. "Salads?" he scoffs as he leans back in his seat. "I'm sure that anyone can't live off of salads all the time, an animal eats better than that" he says shaking his head. I look down at the table. That hurt. I'm sure his responses will hurt more to whatever my answer is to his questions. The waiter comes back, and pours red wine in our glasses. My phone is on the table, I still need to go back to Ravings, I told Clara that I will be late, and to inform the boss. I still need to tell Connor that I need to go back. Its going to be tough. Once the waiter was done, I took a sip of the wine. "The regular sir? Spaghetti Pomodor?"  "Yes. Thank you" Connor looks at me, "You seem uncomfortable"  I look up at him "You make me nervous"  "So I'm told" he smirks. "So tell me a bit about yourself"  "I live with my apartment mate, she is also working at Ravings..." "I don't want you at that place again" He demands.  I lick my lips "I used to do dance, but it was never my passion, architecture is my passion" "Then why the hell are you still doing dance? I know you are paying off bills, but while you were in college you could've done an internship at Holt Architecture. I will give you a salary increase, so that you don't have to dance again especially at that place" he says seriously. The waiter brings our food and we eat. We finished our supper and spoke some more, I'm always looking at my phone, I'm going to be late. Just then my phone rings. Gosh my mom. "Sorry, I need to take this" I say to Connor. I answer my phone. "Mom?"  "Honey where are you?"  "I'm in a meeting"  "This late? There is a dance school opening that your father is opening in New York, you should try it out. Architecture isn't for you dear" I roll my eyes, forgetting that Connor is here. I sigh. My step father isn't my father, so I do not know why she expects me to call him father.  " I love it, so if that is all you are going to call me for then I will have to hang up mom"  "You do not have to disrespect me that way, you know how your father gets when you disrespect me" I just can't take it anymore and I hang up without saying goodbye. She loves to go sit at clubs too, nothing gets done about that. " Is everything okay? You seem upset" I look up at Connor annoyed.  "I guess, I need to go" I say as I stand up "Thank you for dinner" I say. "Wait, let me pay the bill and I will take you home, its dark outside" he says, I sit back down and I check my phone the entire time while waiting for the waiter to bring the bill. "Why are you always looking at your phone? Are you that bored?"  I finally look up at him and I sigh" I need to be at Ravings, I'm late, and I need to be there tonight. I know that you don't want me to work there again, I need to inform them about me quitting with immediate effect" I say. "Can't you do that via your phone?"  "No, I feel that I need to do my last dance which is only fair, seem that this is last minute and then I will leave" I say, hoping that he will just give in to it. "I will drop you off" he says as the waiter brings the bill.  Once the bill was paid, we drove in silence to Ravings "Thank you for dinner" I say as I get out of the car and I walk inside the club. The place is packed, I hurry to my boss's office to give him my resignation.  "Hey, what took you so long?" Clara asks me as I walk past her, she walks behind me. She already did her performance I can tell by the way she looks. She still has on her outfit, long brunette hair all curls and loose . "My boss is an ass" I say.  She laughs " Well I want to see this ass" she says as I enter my boss's office. He is sitting in his seat behind his desk. Going through some papers, he is in his forties, bald, and big built. He looks up at me. "You are late and you not even dressed yet" he says. "Robin, I resign tonight, I will dance my last dance tonight to make up for the last minute resignation"  "What? The crowd loves you, you bring in so much money" he says in disbelief. "I cannot always work here Robin, I found something that I love to do and I cannot have both jobs unfortunately" I shrug. "I will miss you kiddo" he says as he stands up and walks towards me, he embraces me into a hug "My door is always open"  "Thank you" I say. "Now get ready for your last dance, I wish you all the happiness in the world kid" Robin was always like a father to me and Clara. He treated me better than what my step father ever could. I walk back to my dressing room to change, I feel a bit sad to leave this place, we are like family, but my passion is architecture and I don't give a s**t what my mom has to say about my passion, I will not please her with going into dance again. I am done with that part of my life.
