prologue
When she was a teen she thought she knew what her life would be like. A degree, a job, a husband, kids, and happiness ever after. But now she didn't like how her mind made her feel insignificant. Why was she having such thoughts at someone's funeral? Scrolling through her phone, checking her time as a cover-up, but it's all an act to see if someone missed her.
Trying to musk her thoughts, didn't she have it all? The dead girl. She seemed to have had it all, the good life, the good career, good skin, a handsome boyfriend, and a perfect smile for her social media. Why is it people like her had their life cut short whereas people like Zuri, who haven't got it together had so much life ahead?
Zuri knew as every day went by, that her life was going to be long. She knew she'd have to live by everyone's win and death as a standby forever.
She was what people would go to if they wanted to make themselves feel better. Sometimes she felt like a prop that the universe placed to fill earth's spaces.
After the funeral, Zuri and her friends went to a bar for some deep talk. Now and then they would meet up and talk when someone's death shook them. They'd meet and plan for other meet-ups that never came to pass and only brought up once something like a funeral came up. A never-ending cycle.
She always wondered sometimes in the middle of the talk, 'why am I friends with these people?'
And this is how Zuri ended up with no friends at all.
