chapter one:The Moment Chapter Before
One: The Moment Chapter Before Lena had always believed that some places remembered you. The café on Ashbury Street was one of them. It smelled like burnt sugar and old books, just as it had seven years ago, when she used to come here with dreams bigger than her bank account and a heart that hadn’t yet learned how to brace itself. The bell above the door chimed softly as she stepped inside, rain clinging to the hem of her coat like a reluctant goodbye. She hadn’t planned to come here. Not really. But some instincts are older than logic, and hers had led her back to this quiet corner of the city, where the windows fogged easily and the past sat patiently in every empty chair. “Still raining out there?” the barista asked, smiling in that familiar way that suggested time had moved forward for everyone but this place. Lena nodded. “Feels like it might rain forever.” The barista laughed, handed her a cup she hadn’t ordered yet, and said, “Some things never change.” Lena wrapped her fingers around the warm ceramic and turned toward the window—then froze. He was standing across the street. Ethan Blake. Older, unmistakably. His hair was shorter, his shoulders broader, his posture more settled, like a man who had learned where he belonged in the world. But the way he looked down at his phone, brows slightly furrowed, as if concentration was an inconvenience—that was the same. Her heart did something reckless. Seven years ago, Ethan had been the kind of love people warn you about. The kind that felt like destiny until it felt like gravity pulling you under. They had loved each other loudly, fiercely, and without any real plan for the future—until the future arrived anyway and demanded answers they didn’t have. She told herself she wouldn’t look again. She looked again. As if summoned by her gaze, Ethan glanced up. Their eyes met through rain-streaked glass and years of unsaid words. His expression shifted—surprise first, then disbelief, then something softer. Something dangerously familiar. The door opened. The bell chimed. “Lena?” His voice said her name like it had been waiting all this time for permission. She turned fully now, heart pounding so loudly she was certain he could hear it. Up close, she noticed the faint scar near his jaw, one she didn’t remember. Proof that life had happened without her. “Hi, Ethan,” she said, amazed at how steady her voice sounded. “You look… well.” “You too,” he replied, then paused. “You look like yourself.” That might have been the most intimate compliment he could’ve given her. They stood there awkwardly, two people pretending they weren’t carrying the weight of everything they used to be. Outside, the rain pressed harder against the windows, as if trying to listen in. “I didn’t know you were back in town,” Ethan said. “I didn’t know I was coming back,” Lena admitted. “I guess I just… ended up here.” He smiled then—not wide, not easy, but honest. “You always did that.” She laughed softly, surprised by how natural it felt. Like slipping into a familiar song. For a moment, neither of them spoke. And in that quiet space, Lena realized something terrifying and beautiful all at once: Some love doesn’t disappear. It just waits.
