The next day

The maids walked in. They started tidying up the room and prepared the gown for me to wear today while others drew me a bath, I asked in a weak voice ‘Has Kayd been down for breakfast?’, none of the maids bother to either look my way or reply to my question. The maids excused themselves as I headed for the bath when the head maid mentioned ‘Breakfast will be ready soon, they await you in the dining room’. I was definitely in trouble. For a second I wanted to believe that ‘they’ included Kayd, but given that my previous question was simply ignored by the maids and that it was such a cold announcement, it could mean no good.  Mother would not let me get away with it, she was going to strike me again as punishment for sure. Father and mother would not be happy to know that Kayd had left our room and was no longer in the castle. I washed myself and the maids helped me to get into my clothes before I headed downstairs for breakfast. As I reached the ground floor and walked the wide cold corridors of the castle of Brutheya, I could already hear the cutlery in the dining room. I was late. I walked into the dining room quietly, unannounced. I kept my head lowered as I headed for my usual seat at the table. As I sat down, I noticed the look of disgust on mother, while Hisha was peacefully eating her breakfast ‘how did you manage to make him run away after one night? It pains me that you carry your father’s name to such misery. We are probably the laugh of the court at this point. He was a low rank knight! How could you ruin something so simple?’ I shivered as she shouted. I was unsure too. My night, which started as scary and had me worried for my life, turned out to be a night that I don’t think I will ever forget. Kayd made me feel things I did not know were possible. But it probably meant he did not feel the same way. Mother went quiet. I raised my head to see her chasing father with her eyes as he walked into the dining room headed for his seat. We greeted him. As he sat down, he quietly started enjoying his food ‘Did you have a chance to say goodbye?’. The room remained quiet, ‘Skylar, answer when spoken to’, I jumped on my seat of surprise that the question was directed at me. ‘I am unsure of what you mean, father’, ‘Kayd and the soldiers were summoned last night for the quest assigned by the King. They have been deployed to secure the borders from the rebels in attempt to secure the trade routes of the Kingdom’. A small smile formed on my lips, there was a chance he did not want to leave my side, and I wanted to cherish that moment ‘I am afraid not father, the soldier must have been in a rush’ I replied. ‘They were indeed, I had to see them off and I can tell you Kayd looked very angry, and not necessarily because he had to fulfill his duties as a soldier’ my father replied while winking at me. This gave me butterflies in my stomach. The thought that Kayd had wanted to stay with me made me feel desired. I glanced at my sister, but she seemed unbothered by the whole conversation, and I glanced at mother, who seemed unhappy to know that maybe this one time I did not ruin something for her.  That night, I requested to start using the guest room where we spent the night together as my chambers. It felt better to be in this room, the memories I have had of it, were far more pleasant than the ones I have had to keep in my head from my previous chambers. After changing to my nightgown, I sat on the side of the bed and felt the fabric of the fresh sheets that were placed on the bed. As I remembered the past night, I could feel a heat building inside me, a sensation that reminded me of Kayd’s touch along my body, and so I traced it. My hand remembered the corners of my body that Kayd had kissed or caressed. It craved him again. With a potential war, it could be years before I see him again, if he was one of the lucky few to return back to his wife. As these thoughts consumed my head, I laid back on the bed. I was not sure what to do. I closed my eyes, the last thing I remembered was his fluffy dark hair from when he laid his head on my torso the night before. I remember brushing it with my fingers as I drifted to sleep one more time. d to keep in my head from my previous chambers.
