I left the envelope on the table and went to work the next morning like any other day.
The office felt different. People looked at me longer than usual when I walked to my desk. Two women near the copy machine stopped talking when I passed. I heard the words “sugar daddy” and “his money” before they turned away.
I sat down and tried to focus on the papers. David came out of his office a short time later and stopped at my desk.
“Good morning, Laura,” he said. “Everything all right?”
“Yes,” I answered. “Just a normal morning.”
He looked at me for a second longer and then nodded. “I will be in meetings until lunch. Call me if you need anything.”
After he left the whispering started again. A coworker named Rachel walked over to my desk with a fake smile.
“So,” Rachel said in a loud whisper. “You really married the boss. Quick way to move up, isn’t it?”
I looked up from my papers. “I am doing my job the same as before.”
Rachel leaned closer. “Everyone knows what this is. You are just his sugar baby. After his money and his apartment. Some of us actually work for what we get.”
My face grew hot. “You do not know anything about it.”
“I know enough,” Rachel said. She spoke a little louder so others could hear. “Girls like you always find a rich man to pay the bills. Must be nice.”
A few people at nearby desks looked over. I stood up.
“You should stop talking now,” I said.
Rachel laughed. “Or what? You will run to your sugar daddy and cry?”
I felt something sharp in my chest. “I earned my place here before I ever signed any papers. You are only talking because you are jealous.”
Rachel’s smile disappeared. “Jealous of a girl who sells herself? Please.”
She reached out and pushed a stack of papers off my desk onto the floor. “Oops.”
I stared at the papers and then at her. Without thinking I raised my hand and slapped her across the face.
The sound was loud in the open office. Rachel stepped back with wide eyes and held her cheek.
“You hit me!” she said.
“You pushed my work and called me names,” I said clearly. “Do it again and I will make sure everyone knows you started it.”
David’s office door opened. He walked out and looked at the scene. Papers were on the floor. Rachel still held her face. Everyone was watching.
“What is going on?” David asked.
Rachel pointed at me. “She slapped me. I want her reported.”
David looked at me. “Laura?”
“She called me a sugar baby in front of people and pushed my papers on the floor,” I said. “I told her to stop. She did not.”
David turned to Rachel. “Go to human resources and wait there. I will speak to them myself.”
Rachel opened her mouth and then closed it. She walked away quickly. The other workers returned to their desks in silence.
David spoke to me in a lower voice. “Are you hurt?”
“No,” I said. “I am fine.”
“Good. Take a short break if you need it. We will talk later.”
I picked up the papers and sat back down. The rest of the day passed slowly. No one else spoke to me about the marriage. At five-thirty I packed my bag and left.
David called while I was on my way home. “I am coming over at seven. We should talk about today.”
“All right,” I said.
He arrived on time with a bottle of wine and a small bag of food. I let him in and closed the door.
“Rachel will not bother you again,” he said as he set the things on the counter. “I made sure of that.”
“Thank you,” I said.
David poured two glasses of wine and handed me one. “You stood up for yourself today. Most people would have stayed quiet.”
I took a sip. “I was tired of hearing it.”
We sat on the sofa and ate. The talk started with work and then moved to quieter things. David told me he had also heard the gossip and that it did not matter to him. I told him I was still getting used to people looking at me differently.
After a while David set his glass down. “I do not like that they make you feel small.”
“I know,” I said.
He reached over and took my hand. “You are not small to me.”
I looked at him. He leaned in and kissed me. The kiss was slow. I kissed him back. When we pulled apart he rested his forehead against mine for a second.
“I have wanted to do that all day,” he said.
“Me too,” I answered.
He kissed me again. Longer this time. My hand went to his shoulder. His hand rested on the side of my neck. We stayed on the sofa kissing until the room felt warm.
David pulled back just enough to speak. “Tell me if you want to stop.”
“I do not want to stop,” I said.
He stood and held out his hand. I took it. We walked to the bedroom. The only light came from the living room. We kissed beside the bed for a long time. Clothes came off slowly. He kissed my boobs as I wrapped my arms around him.
We had a passionate night where I moaned shamelessly while everything else faded away.
Later the room was dark and quiet. David’s arm was around me and his breathing was even. I felt warm and tired in a way I had not felt before.
I closed my eyes and slept.
When I woke the morning i was panicking. I was still naked.
David was still asleep beside me, naked as well.
The memory of the night returned clearly. The wine. The kisses. The way I had not said stop.
I sat up and pressed my hands to my face.
What have I done?
