I opened the bedroom door and stopped right there, very shocked. Eren my boyfriend of five years was on my bed with my sister Patricia under him. His shirt was on the floor and her dress was pushed up. They both looked at me when the door made a sound. “What are you doing?” I asked. My voice was loud and my hands started to shake. Eren sat up fast. “Laura, wait. This is not what you think. Just let me talk for a minute.” Patricia did not look sorry at all. She fixed her hair with one hand and said, “It is exactly what you think. He chose me tonight.” I stepped into the room and pointed at them. “Get out of my bed. Both of you. Right now.” Eren reached for his shirt and pulled it on quickly. “Please listen to me. It was one mistake. I still care about you. I do not want to lose you over this.” “You care about me while you are with my sister in my own bed?” I said. “How long has this been happening behind my back?” The hallway door opened wider and my father walked in with his wife. They looked at the bed and then at me with the same cold faces they always had. My father shook his head slowly. “Why is there always trouble when you are around, Laura? You bring problems into this house.” His wife, my stepmother crossed her arms tightly. “Patricia is the daughter we raised properly. You should not make such a big scene over something like this.” I stared at both of them. “You are taking their side right now? After what I just saw?” Patricia let out a small laugh. “Of course they are. They always take my side. You should know that by now.” I grabbed my bag from the chair in the corner and pushed all my clothes into it as fast as I could. My hands were still shaking but I kept moving. No one tried to stop me. No one said they were sorry for what happened. I walked out of the house that same night with my bag on my shoulder and did not go back. Years later I sat at a large desk on a high floor of a tall building in the city. I worked as the secretary for David Jones. He was a rich man with dark hair that had a little silver in it and a strong way of standing. People at the company often called him the silver fox because he was older but still very handsome. I had worked for him for several months and I was good at keeping his schedule and papers in order. The office door opened and David walked in. He stopped when he saw me and gave a small smile that made his eyes look softer. “Good morning, Laura,” he said in a clear voice. “Good morning, sir,” I answered and sat up straighter in my chair. He came closer to the desk and looked at the neat piles of papers I was organizing. “You always keep everything in perfect order. I notice that every single day when I walk in.” I felt my face blush and I looked down at the papers. “I just try to do the work well so nothing gets lost or late.” He tilted his head a little and studied my face. “You look nice today. The blue color of your blouse suits you very well.” I glanced up for a second and then back down. “That is kind of you to say. I did not think much about it this morning.” David stayed where he was and his voice became a bit lower. “I have been thinking about something important for a while now. I need to talk to you in private about it. Can we speak freely here?” I looked at him fully now and nodded. “Yes. What is it about?” He checked that the door was closed properly and then continued. “There is a quiet rule in this company that not many people talk about. If the head of the company is not married by the time he turns forty-five, the board can vote him out of his position. I turn forty-five in only three months. I need a secret wife for one full year so I can stop that vote and fix the board the way I need to.” My eyes opened wider and I sat very still. “A secret wife? What does that mean exactly?” “Yes,” David said. “I want it to be you. We would sign papers and keep it private. I will give you money every month and a real share in the company. Enough power and money that the people who hurt you before will have to see what you become and regret how they treated you.” I sat without moving for a few seconds. “Why would you choose me for something as big as that? You barely know about my past.” He leaned in a little closer and his voice stayed calm. “Because I trust you more than anyone else who works here. You never gossip and you never make mistakes with important things. And because when I look at you I feel something I have not felt in a long time. I think you feel some of it too when we talk like this.” My heart beat faster in my chest. “This is a very big thing to ask of someone. It is not a small favor.” David smiled in a soft way that still looked serious. “I know it is big. I would not ask if I had another choice that felt right. Think about it carefully tonight. But I need an answer soon because time is running out for me and for the company.” He stood up straight and walked toward the door. Before he opened it he looked back at me one more time. “Say yes, Laura. Be my secret wife for the year. We can help each other.” The door closed quietly behind him. I stayed in my chair and stared at the empty space where he had been standing. My hands felt cold and my thoughts moved around in circles. Could I really say yes to this and change everything again?
