Damiano and Grace had embraced this life of darkness. The best part of all this was that Damiano and Grace never let the darkness touch them when they were together. They were really the Hades and Persephone of the real world. Hades falls in love with his angel, who was so scared, help her become the queen and make her realize her one true potential. Grace tried to bring Damiano out of the darkness, being his light but she rather got engulfed in the darkness herself and thrives in that like she always belonged there. Every person has their demons and it's on every individual how they deal with them.
