Chapter 1: Leaving Home
It was 7 in the morning on a Thursday when I got up and immediately knew what day it was. It was the day I went to college. It was so nerve wracking to me that I was going to a state that I’ve never been before just for school. It kinda felt weird not seeing anything in my room when I woke up but the necessary things I needed to get ready for the day. I honestly didn’t care that I was going to a different state. As long as I was getting an education, I was fine with it. I got up and went downstairs to get some breakfast when I saw my mom and dad in the kitchen, cooking together. They haven’t cooked together in a long time. I also saw my brother, Elijah, sitting at the kitchen table. I waved at Elijah and he waved back. I walked over and sat at the kitchen table next to him to wait on the food when my dad turned to me. “There’s my college girl,” my dad exclaimed, walking up to me and kissing me on the forehead. “Ugh, don’t remind me,” I said, smiling from ear to ear. “Why not,” he asked. “Aren’t you excited to get the hell out of here?” “I mean kind of,” I said as I saw my dad give me that look that meant that he knew I was lying. “Yes, I am,” I added, whispering. “Good,” he whispered back. “I still can’t believe you’re leaving me with these crazy people,” Elijah said. “Hey,” my dad exclaimed. “We’re not crazy!” “Yeah y’all are,” I said. “Guys, breakfast is ready,” my mom exclaimed. “Now y’all can stop arguing about who’s crazy and who’s not.” “Ooh, pancakes,” my dad said. Elijah and I just laughed at him. I’m gonna miss laughing at him when I leave because my dad is one of the funniest people in the world, well at least me and Elijah think so. He’s funny without trying to be funny and that’s what we love about him. My mom put the food on the table and sat down. My dad took his seat as well. We all ate in silence and after I was done, I went into the kitchen, washed my plate, and went back upstairs to get ready to leave. My flight was at 1pm, so I had to hurry because I didn't want to miss it and have to drive a whole day just to get there. After getting ready, I put on some perfume, grabbed my purse and was about to walk out the door when I forgot to tell my family goodbye. I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye, so I walked back into the living room where my parents and brother were and said, “I’m about to leave.” “Ok,” my dad said as he got up. “Be safe out there.” “I will,” I said. “I love you.” “I love you, too, pumpkin. Have fun.” He then pulled me into a tight hug and let go after a couple of seconds, and my mom got up and said, “Call us as soon as you land.” “I will. I love you.” “I love you, too, Nem Nem,” she said. She also gave me a tight hug. When she let go, my brother got up. “I can’t believe time went by so fast,” he said. “Same,” I said, giggling. “I’m gonna miss you so much cause you know how our parents are,” he said and got close to my ear to whisper, “They’re a bit crazy.” “Hey,” my dad exclaimed. “Not this argument again!” “Well it’s true,” I said. “Anyways, I’m gonna miss you,” Elijah said. “I’m gonna miss you too,” I said. “Text me as soon as you get on the plane.” “I’m gonna text you as soon as I leave the driveway,” I said. We both laughed and hugged each other. “Love you, lil bro,” I said. “Love you, too, big sis,” he said. We then let go and Elijah walked me outside to my car. I got in the car and drove off, Elijah waving at me as I left.
