My Pepper Spray Mate

710 Words
Logan (POV) Sam was still lying on the cold, dusty floor of the factory, struggling to regain consciousness. The stench of blood and death filled the air. Derick’s men were lying lifeless all around, their bodies twisted in unnatural angles. But Derick was gone. My jaw clenched in fury. He had escaped… again. And my mate… my mate had driven away. Along with Rita. And along with Rita’s human mate. My mate was a human. That truth hit me harder than any silver blade ever could. I walked back inside the factory and shifted back into my human form, the air still thick with smoke, fear, and blood. My eyes fell on something lying near the entrance. A small pepper spray bottle. Her scent clung to it strongly. I picked it up slowly, my fingers tightening around it as a soft, unfamiliar smile formed on my lips. My mate… It was her voice on the phone. It was her who gave us the location. It was her who tried to save Rita. Everything… it was all her. “Alpha…” Sam groaned weakly behind me. I turned around. He was finally opening his eyes. “Why the hell did you allow the humans to take Rita?” he demanded, pain and worry evident in his voice. “She needs to be treated by the pack doctor. Those silver chains—” “Give me your phone,” I interrupted darkly. “Call Rita’s number. Get their address. And inform the pack doctor to be ready.” Sam stared at me in shock. “But Alpha… they are humans. Rita hasn’t told her mate about us yet. And those crazy humans—” “Another word about my Luna,” I warned in a deathly calm voice, my eyes glowing with menace, “and I will not spare your life.” Silence. It took him a second to understand what I had said. His eyes widened. “Y-Your… Luna?” I turned away, gripping the pepper spray tightly in my palm. “My pepper spray mate…” I murmured under my breath with a dangerous smile. “I’m coming for you.” --- We reached Ken’s apartment building within minutes. Sam had called the number and spoken to Ken. That i***t human actually believed Sam when he told him that Rita had a family doctor and that no other medicine would work on her. Without hesitation, Ken gave him the address. Humans trusted too easily. Shelly had already mindlinked and brought our pack doctor, Greta, along with all the necessary medicines and equipment. She arrived just as we did. We all stood in front of Ken’s apartment door. Shelly knocked. The door opened slowly. Ken stood there, his face pale, eyes tired and filled with fear for Rita. “We’re Rita’s friends,” Shelly said gently. His eyes immediately landed on Sam. “You?” Ken said in an accusing tone. Sam stiffened. “I am her friend. I went there to rescue her, but you attacked me.” Ken looked conflicted. Shelly quickly intervened and introduced all of us as Rita’s coworkers and close friends. When she said our names, realization dawned on Ken’s face. “You’re Sam… and Shelly…” he muttered. “Rita mentioned you both.” He lowered his head slightly. “I’m sorry,” he said to Sam. We entered the apartment. Greta immediately rushed towards the bedroom where Rita was resting and began examining her. My heartbeat, however, was racing for a different reason. My eyes searched the entire apartment frantically. Living room. Corridor. Kitchen. But she wasn’t there. Kiya… Only her bag lay on the couch. Her scent still clung to it strongly, wrapping around my senses like an invisible thread pulling me toward her. Then my gaze fell on a photo frame kept on the shelf. A family picture. Ken… and beside him, a little girl with a bright, wide smile—so full of life and innocence that my chest tightened. Kiya… My lips curved into an unconscious smile. So this is what my mate looked like as a child. A sudden knock echoed through the apartment. Every nerve in my body went alert. I inhaled sharply. Her scent. She was here.
