Rita’s POV
“Ken, you know I don’t like parties,” I said, crossing my arms. “I’ve told you before, I like spending time with you—but not in a club.”
“Come on, Rita,” Ken pleaded with a soft smile. “It’ll be fun. I promise.”
It had been two months since his breakup.
Two months since fate pulled us together in the most unexpected way.
We first met at his restaurant. I still remembered that day clearly—the smell of food, the warmth in his brown eyes, the way my wolf instantly calmed when she saw him. After that, I started visiting almost daily. Slowly, we began talking. Then laughing. Then exchanging numbers.
I knew his heart was broken.
So I waited.
I gave him time to heal.
And every day I gave my wolf a small dose of peace—by letting her see Ken.
I still hadn’t told him the truth.
About the pack.
About the wolves.
About what I really am.
I wanted him to know me as Rita the woman, not Rita the Gamma. I wanted him to choose me before knowing the monster world behind me.
Because I was terrified…
That once he knows the truth, he might leave.
“I can’t,” I finally said softly. “I have to go to work. I can’t stay out late today.”
He sighed, then suddenly lit up. “Okay—but you have to meet Kiya. At least that. Please?”
A warm smile curved on my lips. “I’d love to meet your sister.”
His face brightened instantly like a child being promised candy.
We met almost every day at his restaurant for a few hours. Sam and Logan had started noticing my constant disappearances into the human world. My phone usage increased, my mind was always elsewhere—and it became impossible to hide the truth any longer.
A few days ago, I finally told them.
I told them about my human mate.
Logan had gone silent.
Sam had been furious.
But neither of them stopped me.
Because they both saw it in my eyes.
I was in love.
I wasn’t ready for a mate before.
But now?
Now I wanted Ken more than anything in this world. I wanted to protect him from more heartbreaks. From lies. From pain.
Because Ken… only knew how to love.
---
By evening, I was back in the pack.
The sharp change from city noise to forest silence always reminded me who I truly was.
I headed straight toward the Alpha’s office.
Knock.
“Come in.”
I opened the door to find Logan standing near the desk, while Sam leaned against the wall with his arms crossed.
“Derick is showing his presence again,” Logan said without preamble. “He still hasn’t entered our territory, but he keeps appearing near the borders.”
“I need more information on him,” he added, sliding the pictures across the desk.
My gaze hardened.
This was the same man I was spying on.
“He’s a rogue,” I said calmly. “But not on any wanted list.”
Sam nodded. “When he was in a pack, he was one of their best warriors.”
“He left his pack after his mate died in front of his eyes,” I continued. “He blamed his Alpha for her death.”
“And since then,” Sam added, “he’s broken himself into the human world. A failed man.”
Logan didn’t look convinced.
“We’re missing something,” he said slowly, eyes narrowing at the images. “It’s not that simple.”
He looked up sharply. “When you followed him… did he ever wander around our borders?”
Sam and I exchanged a glance.
“No,” we said together.
Logan’s jaw tightened.
“But he was spotted last month by the border patrol. Mostly at night.”
Confusion churned inside me.
“That’s impossible,” I said slowly. “I had my men watching him during nights too. He never left his house.”
Silence fell heavy in the room.
How can one man be at two places at the same time?
A strange unease crept into my wolf.
“What time exactly was he seen?” I asked.
“Late nights. Always,” Logan answered.
My fists clenched.
Something didn’t add up.
“Alpha,” I said firmly, lifting my gaze to meet his, “give me one more chance. I won’t disappoint you. This time… I’ll find the truth.”
For a moment, Logan studied me intensely.
Then he gave a slow nod.
“Be careful, Rita,” he warned. “This game is no longer simple.”
And for the first time since I met Ken…
Fear settled quietly in my heart.
Because I suddenly realized—
My two worlds were dangerously close to colliding
